The 1st Blind Black Woman Author
Overcomes Tragedy and Loss To
Pay Loving Tribute To Her Son In
Moving Hair Raising Book

Author Shellice Beharie pays tribute to the memory of her loving son in her debut picture book, PRINCE AND HIS MOTHER’S CROWN: Tales Within my Mother’s Hair. This read-aloud narrative communicates that in their early stages of childhood boys can find comfort and creativity in their mother’s tresses.  She is the 1st known visually impaired Black woman to author a children's book.

PRINCE AND HIS MOTHER’S CROWN published by Outskirt Press in April 2020 is a richly colored book for early readers, grade levels K-3. Full of positive imagery, the book is illustrated by Richa Kinra.

Each page showcases a graceful, loving Queen mother engaging in the activities of her son’s wild imagination, showing their precious familial relationship. Pictures of a young Prince climbing his mother’s Rapunzel style braid honors her strength, while an image of him slaying a dragon in her curly afro shows where his sense of security lies.

Once Fired Executive Dawn Kelly
Now Vigorously Nourishes The
Health And Wealth Of
Southeast Queens And Brooklyn

Dawn Kelly, a graduate of the legendary HBCU Howard University, was later to become a well traveled executive - is now winning against the odds!  She was fired from a major corporation but pivoted to become a successful entrepreneur.

Dawn has built a viable noteworthy business and received a myriad of awards for her entrepreneurial acumen.  However, Ms. Kelly also has taken it upon herself to also inspire other area business people to succeed.

Therefore, she actually symbolizes a Nourish Spot for both health and wealth in our community.

Dawn is quick to admit her success was more possible because her daughter and son also bought into her vision and mission.  Their support helped her to build her multi-location and faceted business the Nourish Spot, into the thriving juicing, smoothie, and healthy food powerhouse it is today.

I was able to convince Dawn to graciously free up time from her hectic Nourish Spot entrepreneurial endeavors, and business advocacy schedule, to share with us how to build your business to succeed despite the odds.  Her full video and written interview synopsis follows below...

Community Rallies Behind
BlaQue Cash Mob at
Earnest Foods in Queens

Founder of The BlaQue Resource Network Aleeia Abraham

On Sunday, November 24, BlaQue Community Cares will host a BlaQue Cash Mob at Earnest Foods, a Black-owned organic grocery store in Jamaica, Queens. A cash mob is a community effort to boost sales by shopping locally, supporting Black-owned businesses, and promoting economic empowerment in Queens.

Earnest Foods opened its doors in November 2021, during a critical time for the community. As Jamaica, Queens, continues to grapple with the challenges of being a food desert, the organic supermarket was founded to address a dire need: access to fresh, healthy, and high quality food options.

Event Details:

  • Date: Sunday, November 24th, from 2 - 4 PM

  • Location: Earnest Foods, 123-01 Merrick Boulevard, Queens, NY 11434

  • Purpose: To support Earnest Foods and highlight the need for sustainable local businesses in underserved areas.

“This is about more than a day of shopping,” said Aleeia Abraham, founder of BlaQue Community Cares. “It’s about using our dollars to sustain businesses that support our neighborhoods.”

Exclusive Interview With Bronzeville Producer Margaret Madhi

Video and Subsequent Written Interview with Kamau Austin With Margaret Madhi

We do an Exclusive Interview with Margaret Madhi, Producer and Director, of the groundbreaking musical, "Bronzeville," with the Mahdi Theatre Company.  Madhi is set to unveil “Bronzeville The Musical,” as a powerful homage to the historical significance of Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, on November 16th and 17th at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York City.

This marked debut promises to captivate audiences with its moving portrayal of resilience, culture, and community. “Bronzeville The Musical,” chronicles the transformative journey of a father and his wayward teenage son as they navigate the complexities of their family’s heritage.

This poignant production weaves together themes of redemption and the importance of legacy, while poignantly reflecting on the Great Migration — a period during which millions sought new lives in the North. Through its rich narrative, the musical spotlights the vitality and artistry of Black history, showcasing the profound contributions of the Bronzeville community.

“This project was born from the urgent need to change the narrative surrounding urban Black youth,” said Producer and Director Margaret Mahdi. “Our artistic responsibility is to honor the legacy of those who came before us, especially in light of events like George Floyd’s tragic death and current migration challenges. ‘Bronzeville The Musical’ serves as a vital platform for ongoing discussions about identity and heritage.”

I was able to grab Margaret for a Quick Interview about her historic musical Bronzeville to be performed at the iconic Apollo Theatre.  Checkout her video and subsequent written Interview below...

Driving Diversity: Pioneering AI Solutions in Clinical Research

In the ever-evolving landscape of clinical research, the importance of diversity cannot be overstated. Historically, clinical trials have often underrepresented various communities, particularly BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) populations. This lack of representation can lead to skewed results and limit the applicability of medical advancements to diverse populations.

Divergent CRO is at the forefront of addressing these disparities through discovering innovative applications of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Challenge of Diversity in Clinical Trials

Clinical trials play a crucial role in developing new therapies and medications. However, the underrepresentation of BIPOC communities in these studies has been a persistent issue. Factors such as socioeconomic barriers, historical mistrust of the medical system, and lack of access to information have contributed to this challenge. As a result, the medical community often needs more data to ensure that treatments are safe and effective for all populations.

Divergent CRO's Commitment to Change

Divergent CRO recognizes the urgent need for change and has committed to enhancing diversity in clinical trials by leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies. They aim to ensure that BIPOC communities are included in research and actively engaged and represented.

Insight In Southeast Queens

Sherie B. Ellison, is looking to help an often overlooked sector of our community, often when it comes to modern digital media technology - senior citizens.  Digital media has become the dominant form of media in our society - even surpassing television.

It is also becoming an indispensable part of our personal lives due to smartphones.  Smartphones have become very powerful and functional, to the point of becoming not only personal staples but actually indispensable in our society.

However, it becomes challenging for all of us to keep up with fast paced advances in digital technology especially senior citizens.  Nevertheless, enter stage right Mrs. Sherie B. Ellison, into our home town of Southeast Queens.

Mrs. Ellison is fired up with a passion and determination to help senior citizens navigate and get a handle on both
being aware and harnessing the power of digital technology and media platforms.  I'm excited about her organization and glad it didn't take much for me convince Sherie, Founder of Tech Savvy Seniors, to do an exclusive interview with me on her personal purpose and organization's goals.

Longtime Global Prostate Cancer Advocate Kevin Byrd named Super Nova in Groundbreaking Interview

Kevin Byrd’s long, lengthy, and esteemed career as "the world’s foremost Prostate Cancer Awareness Advocate" begin at the tender age of 24.  It all begin as a result of his grandfather being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

It is still very unusual for a young man to take up the work that Mr. Byrd has embarked upon during his twenties.  Let’s take a glimpse into the extraordinary work Kevin Byrd has been doing over several decades.

Mr. Byrd started early in his career as a child actor in Utica, New York.  What is unique about his journey is the length of time that he has been involved in advocacy as well as his deep level of human commitment through trials and tribulations.

It is a known fact that in the normal course of our lives we will all encounter roadblocks in life. Mr. Byrd through it all has found a way to consistently spread his message locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to make a difference on the planet.

As we take readers down memory lane to learn about the scope and depth of his life's mission (and work to uncover and shared multiple layers of his life) we hope it will empower others to be faithful to their dreams.  Kevin Byrd is nationally known for his portrayal as Lt. John R. Fox in the 2006 History/HBO movie “Honor Deferred” produced by Al Roker.  It starred Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac.

Lt. John R. Fox was a WWII hero who killed 100 German Soldiers in the War, died in action, and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, five decades after his heroic acts by President Clinton.  The documentary picked up an Emmy/NAMIC Vision Award Nomination and garnered great reviews.

Smart Policy, Public Support Is
Essential To Black Business
Equal opportunity employers: When Black businesses thrive, the entire economy thrives, according to Phil Andrews, who says governments, lenders and other difference-makers have an obligation to help minority-owned businesses succeed.

By Phil Andrews

To close out Black Business Month, let’s celebrate the dramatic increase in Black entrepreneurship and confront the challenges that still exist.

To overcome discriminatory lending practices and inadequate financial support, Black business owners have always been innovative and adaptable. They’ve built their own support networks through empowering organizations like the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce (LIAACC) and the African American Small Business Foundation. The success of these organizations is measured by how member businesses increase their revenue, employ more people and bolster the net worth of their enterprises.

Black business owners have also built thriving communities online. Digital platforms have become a crucial tool, leveling the playing field and bypassing many of the gatekeepers that have historically undermined economic success in our communities.

The rise of digital platforms has brought a new wave of opportunities for Black entrepreneurs. With just a smartphone and a vision, Black business owners can now reach global markets, access vital resources and scale their ventures in ways that were previously unimaginable.
