Exclusive Interview With Bronzeville Producer Margaret Madhi

“This project was born from the urgent need to change the narrative surrounding urban Black youth,” said Producer and Director Margaret Mahdi. “Our artistic responsibility is to honor the legacy of those who came before us, especially in light of events like George Floyd’s tragic death and current migration challenges. ‘Bronzeville The Musical’ serves as a vital platform for ongoing discussions about identity and heritage.”

Kamau's Question: Margaret, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule. We are really excited about your historic production coming to New York's legendary Apollo Theatre!
Can you tell me a little about your background? Like where you grew up and maybe went to school?
Margaret's Answer:...
Thank you Kamau for this
opportunity. I grew up on the Southside of Chicago, in a diverse
community, called Hyde Park.
The community is spirited and filled with artistic outlets, cultural activities, and is a neighboring sister to Bronzeville. I attended a private school, during elementary and high school years, and attended Northern Illinois University to pursue education and theater studies. I love to teach.
A Director is a teacher. I served as a Chicago Public School teacher for nearly 20 years, at the same time, operating and owing a grassroots company.
Kamau's Question: What are some of your motivating factors in producing Bronzeville the Musical?
Kamau's Question: On this November 16th and 17th your Production Company, Mahdi Theatre Company, will perform the historic and highly anticipated "Bronzvelle the Musical," at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Can you tell us about the importance of this theatrical production and collaboration. What are some of your plans and goals for the future of your Mahdi Theatre Company?
Margaret's Answer: Absolutely! This opportunity is a gift packaged by God. Mahdi Theatre Co. have been cultivating and improving Bronzeville The Musical for 20 years, and Now, we believe each one of us has a work to perform during our lifetime. And if we are true to the gift that God has given us; if we are true to the principal of love, then we will adore the ancestors who laid the foundation that we stand on today.
Legendary, powerful entertainers laid the foundation for us today, so that we can walk in their footsteps to be given the opportunity to tell our musical. This is the significance in performing this Play at the legendary Apollo. The production and Apollo's mission, represent each other.

Can you tell me a little about your background? Like where you grew up and maybe went to school?

Kamau's Question: Who or what inspired
you to take the leap of faith to expand from your background in
education to go into creating your own Theatre Production Company?
Margaret's Answer:...
I was inspired by special people, who walked the road of Faith and who
embodied a tenacious spirit. I met conscious directors whom I was
fortunate to study under their tutelage.
Winifred Rasulallah, Daryl Pandy, Mother Tynetta Muhammad (wife of Elijah Muhammad), all have now passed. They taught me to be the best that I can be.

They
emphasized the importance in having noble character. It is good
character and one's Faith, that will allow one to catapult to the next
tier of success in life.
Kamau's Question: What are some of your motivating factors in producing Bronzeville the Musical?
Margaret's Answer:...
I am motivated by the art itself. I know there is a bigger picture, and
my job is to use my gifts, talents and art to infuse and promote a
positive message about who we are as a people in our society.
As a playwright, it is a duty to write our own narratives to inspire, motivate and promote something wholesome to our world. We must do it for the next generation. Our black and brown youth must see themselves in a positive light, on the stages and in films! Arts and Culture brings people together, and it always us to learn from one another.

Kamau's Question: Where do you find and how do you cultivate your theatrical talent?
Margaret's Answer:..
As a student who is constantly learning and evolving in my art, in
theater, I learn from fellow experts on the Mahdi Theatre Team, and
working with young artists daily is how I develop my craft. Ranako Jahi
and Pemon Rami, are seasoned Chicago and International
directors, who I consult with on a regular basis, to ensure that I am
"on point" as a director an playwright.
Constantly studying theater techniques, reading articles and watching online videos, are ways I keep my skills cultivated. One has to study their artform to be great, and I strive not to take the opportunity for granted!

We are praying that the musical makes it to Broadway. To have a story
about the rich journey of our ancestors and their contributions to
America is significant, and must be told for the world to see. Our
stories deserve to be on the world stages, also.
