Tech Savvy Seniors Looks
To Empower Elders with Digital
Insight In Southeast Queens

Sherie B. Ellison, is looking to help an often overlooked sector of our community, often when it comes to modern digital media technology - senior citizens.  Digital media has become the dominant form of media in our society - even surpassing television.

It is also becoming an indispensable part of our personal lives due to smartphones.  Smartphones have become very powerful and functional, to the point of becoming not only personal staples but actually indispensable in our society.

However, it becomes challenging for all of us to keep up with fast paced advances in digital technology especially senior citizens.  Nevertheless, enter stage right Mrs. Sherie B. Ellison, into our home town of Southeast Queens.

Mrs. Ellison is fired up with a passion and determination to help senior citizens navigate and get a handle on both
being aware and harnessing the power of digital technology and media platforms.  I'm excited about her organization and glad it didn't take much for me convince Sherie, Founder of Tech Savvy Seniors, to do an exclusive interview with me on her personal purpose and organization's goals.

Mrs. Ellison weighs in like a visionary on why she feels it is so important to bring seniors up to speed using today's rapidly advancing technology.

Kamau's Question: Thank you Sherie, for taking time out of your busy schedule helping seniors in our community, to do an interview with me.

Can you tell me a little about your background? Like where you grew up and maybe went to school?

Sherie's Answer: I'm originally from Jamaica, West Indies, but I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens. I went to Jamaica High School, then studied at Morgan State University for my undergrad, and later got my master's from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. I’ve got both a bachelor’s and a master’s in social work.

Kamau's Question: Who or what inspired you to get involved in helping elderly people to use digital technology

Sherie's Answer: My inspiration for helping the elderly with digital technology comes from the close relationship I had with my grandmother. She meant the world to me, and I always felt a strong desire to protect her.

I created this training program in her honor and for all the elders who have given so much to us. My goal is to give the elderly the confidence to navigate the digital world, stay connected with loved ones, and protect themselves from online scams.

It’s really about empowering them to feel safe and capable in a world that’s constantly changing. This training isn’t just about learning tech skills - it’s about ensuring that those who have always looked out for us feel safe, supported, and protected.

Kamau's Question: Why is it so important for elderly persons to get up to date on digital and Internet technology today?

Sherie's Answer: As technology keeps moving forward, it can feel pretty overwhelming for a lot of seniors, and unfortunately, there are people out there who take advantage of that. That’s why it’s so important to help older folks feel confident using digital tools.

It’s not just about staying connected with family and friends, but also protecting themselves from scams. When seniors know how to spot harmful links or avoid giving out personal information, it helps keep them safe from people trying to steal their money—or even worse, their homes. In the end, it’s all about giving them the confidence to navigate a fast-changing world and feel secure doing it.

Kamau's Question: Do you also provide more exclusive tech training for elderly persons?

Sherie's Answer: Not at this time. For now we focus on our program Tech Savvy Seniors.

Kamau's Question: What is the best way to contact you and join the tech training program

Sherie's Answer: Email sheriebellison@gmail.com or call me at 347-551-2818
