New Book The Fashion Disciple
By La'Daska Mechelle
Patterns and Sews UP Design Success

Highly respected and sought after designer and clothing manufacturer maven La'Daska Mechelle, wants to pattern designing success for future clothiers in her new book The Fashion Disciple.  Ms. Mechelle has traveled the US with her military family in the past but now favors Southeast Queens, as a fashionable place to live and build her business and help her clothing clients.

She is a veteran of the fashion industry who wants to help others wear the garments of success in the business sector.  After researching her fashion history I wanted to help showcase her business and creative abilities to others looking to make a splash into the clothing industry.

I feel quite fortunate to persuade her to do an exclusive interview with me.  The following interview will be a tribute to her resilience and ability to help create viable fashion companies, brands, and styles that make a statement in what her clients design and their customers wear.

Kamau's Question:
Thank you Ms. Mechelle, for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to me about your new book and business.  La'Daska, can you tell me a little about your background? Like where you grew up and maybe went to school?

La'Daska's Answer:
I grew up and was raised in Dallas, Texas, which was a huge part of shaping who I am today.  Having a foundation rooted in family and culture is important in defining who a person becomes.

Later, I moved to Tampa to attend fashion design school where I majored in fashion design and marketing, and it was there that I began raising my children while juggling my passion for fashion. As a military spouse, I moved around quite a bit, but we eventually settled in New York.

It’s in New York where I truly found myself and was able to fully explore my creative ideas and passions. The city has such a vibrant, dynamic energy, and that allowed me to dive deep into the fashion industry and entrepreneurship, and ultimately, build the foundation of my businesses.

Kamau's Question: Who or what inspired you to take the leap of faith and go into your fashion and clothing business?

La'Daska's Answer: My inspiration to take the leap came from a desire to create something meaningful and impactful in an industry that I love. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of fashion to express identity and culture.

But beyond that, making sacrifices in my marriage to support my spouse, as a military wife, meant I had to put many of my own dreams on hold. Once my marriage ended in divorce, it became clear to me, that this was my opportunity to finally do all the things I had ever wanted to do but couldn’t because I was bound by my husband’s military contracts.

Losing everything in that process fueled my determination. I knew I couldn’t see myself living in poverty, and that realization inspired me to push forward and create a better future. I wanted to help people, especially those without traditional resources, find their way into this industry — and that’s what ultimately pushed me to start my own business.

Kamau's Question: What makes your fashion business services unique or exclusive?

La'Daska's Answer: What sets my business apart is the emphasis on personal touch and innovation. We don’t just manufacture or design clothing; we help our clients turn their visions into reality.

Whether it's guiding emerging designers through the production process or helping brands build distribution channels, we bring creativity and strategy together. Plus, with The LM Factory, we emphasize small-scale production and sustainable practices, which allows our clients to grow at their own pace. This hands-on approach to business and creativity is something you won’t find with larger manufacturers.

Kamau's Question: Can you tell us about the title of your new book and your goals in becoming an author?

La'Daska's Answer: The title of my new book, "The Fashion Disciple: A Young Innovator's Guide to Entrepreneurship," represents the journey of learning and growing in operating businesses and the fashion industry. In fashion, you're always challenged to learn something new, and I wanted this book to be a guide for young entrepreneurs who are just starting out.

While operating The LM Factory, I witnessed firsthand that 90% of creatives were lacking the foundational structure needed to bring their business ideas to life. This led to issues with their ability to launch, start, or grow their brands, and it was disheartening to see.

That’s what inspired me to create a roadmap for them to follow as they elevate and become more serious about their purpose and passions. Becoming an author allows me to share the roadmap to making profit in your first year like I did with my manufacturing company and make an impact to a wider audience, helping aspiring designers and entrepreneurs overcome these challenges and build successful businesses.

Kamau's Question: What particular lessons and insights would one gain by buying your book?

La'Daska's Answer: Readers will gain practical, step-by-step advice on how to start a fashion business from scratch. They’ll learn how to establish a brand with limited capital, understand the importance of creating a customer profile, and navigate distribution channels effectively.

The book also dives into critical elements like legal steps, choosing the right business model, marketing strategies, and scaling your business in a sustainable way. Beyond business tactics, "The Fashion Disciple" emphasizes the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, offering mental health resources for entrepreneurs who face the stresses of building a business.

It also covers essential topics like accounting, budgeting, and how to leverage personal credit to build business credit. Whether you're an emerging designer or a young entrepreneur, the lessons in this book will help you move from idea to execution with confidence, while maintaining a balanced approach to both business and personal well-being.

Kamau: What is the best way to contact you and buy your new book?
