Malacia Anderson, is one of the go to African Inspired fashion designers in our area with an international clientele of women with select tastes in couture clothing and cultural style.  Ms. Anderson is unwavering in her focus on creating contemporary African style fashions for women with exceptional taste in clothing.

Malacia, is a highly sought after women's designer and seasoned exclusive dressmaker who has the panache to model her clothing line also is the face of her fashion brand.  Anderson draws her penchant for stylish women's fashions from her mom and has also had forays into other sartorial arts like crocheting and creating prom and bridal dresses.

Ms. Anderson will be showcasing her creations in our area tomorrow (9/8/2024) in Rochdale Village Fall Festival.  I convinced the cultural fashion artisan to spend a little time for us and do a provocative exclusive interview with me.  Her exclusive interview will follow after our sponsor's message.

Kamau 4 The Scoop: It is an honor to get a chance to interview you.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview.  

I know you have a bunch of events taking place in the Queens and Long Island area this Fall.  Can you start by telling us a little about your background and life growing up in New York?

Malacia's Answer: I was raised in Roosevelt, Long Island, where my mother would lovingly sew our school clothes. She tucked us into bed by 7:30 p.m., which gave her time to indulge in her passion for sewing.

Many mornings, we awoke to find new dresses hanging on our doors, ready for school. This magic inspired me, and at the age of nine, I joined our local 4-H club to learn sewing myself. By each subsequent summer, I had honed my skills enough to help teach other youngsters. 

My journey led me to compete in the NY State fair through 4-H in the 10th grade, where I triumphed, and as they say, "the rest is fashion history." 

Kamau 4 The Scoop: What inspired you to go into your modern African Clothing business?

Malacia's Answer: Before launching my online store, I operated a home-based seamstress business called In His Glory Creations, specializing in prom and bridal wear. Over time, I realized that my time and pricing were not always respected.

After completing my last bridal party, I decided to stop accepting external sewing projects. For years, I didn't sew at all and instead focused on crocheting for leisure, mastering freehand work without patterns. Although I could read patterns, I preferred the freedom of designing, applying sewing principles to my crochet work.

I started selling hats, scarves, and more. In 2012, I joined an online sewing group on Instagram for fun, where we would create a chosen pattern each month and share our creations. Seeing others in the group start their own online clothing and sewing businesses inspired me.

I believed in my sewing skills, so I thought, "Why not me?" A colleague introduced me to Etsy, a platform I was already familiar with as a buyer of crochet patterns. I decided to become a seller and created a skirt inspired by my favorite designer, the Italian-Haitian Stella Jean.

I opened my Etsy shop on August 6, 2013, and made my first sale in September 2013 to an Instagram follower. I chose to work with African fabrics, drawn to the love of my culture and the fabrics' rich, vibrant colors, which I combined with my passion for feminine, vintage styles.

Kamau 4 The Scoop: What is the name of your company and services you offer in your business?

Malacia's Answer: My company name is Li LI's Creations.  It is a made to order hand made clothing brand. Each piece is made to the customers size in one of a kind African prints. 

Kamau 4 The Scoop: What would you say is the most unique about your fashion brand? 

Malacia's Answer: The most unique aspect of Li Li's Creations is its carefully curated designs that are flattering on all body types specializing in giving personal seamstress services through e-commerce. Each design is limited in nature ensuring exclusivity in design and access.

Kamau 4 The Scoop: Can you tell us about some of your upcoming appearances at Pop-Up shopping events in the area?     

Malacia's Answer: I will be popping on Sunday, September 8th 8 - 6 p.m. at Rochdale Village Community Fall Festival located at Circle 5 166th pl and Guy R Brewer Blvd.  You can find me at spot E-27.
