Southeast Queens

By Latoya Lindsay and Kamau Austin

The BlaQue Resource Network proudly celebrated its 5th Anniversary on Friday, August 9th, 2024, at Nettie’s Bar & Restaurant, a beloved Black-owned establishment in Queens.

The event was a sold-out success, with limited tickets reflecting the immense support and enthusiasm from the community.  Nettie's is an upscale and cozy restaurant cooking up delicious staple soul food and artisan tasty desserts.  It was a savory venue for BlaQue's 5th Anniversary and committed, attractive, and insightful supporters.

This milestone marks five years of BRN's dedicated efforts in sharing resources and uplifting Black-owned businesses across Queens. The evening also included the presentation of four special awards to honor outstanding members:

1. *BlaQue Community Impact Award*
2. *BlaQue Leadership Excellence Award*
3. *BlaQue Business Innovator Award*
4. *BlaQue Rising Star Award*

Aleeia Abraham, the visionary and responsive Founder of the BlaQue Resource Network
(the Moniker is a confluence of Black and Queens) has curated one of the most impactful groups in the history of Black organizations in Queens.  Abraham and her dedicated supporters represent an energetic and committed group of advocates for community empowerment and upliftment.

The BlaQue Resource Network, boasts a membership that has grown to over 38,100 members and still expanding from its jumpstart on Facebook and is expanding to other social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.  Aleeia has received numerous awards from area leaders and organizations for her efforts.

Ms. Abraham feels there is an important and essential relationship between business development and education in making a viable and upwardly mobile community.  She is a bit visionary in this regard since many mainstream educational institutions in the Black community, and the larger country as well, don't teach or emphasize entrepreneurship.  Aleeia focuses on affirming educators who have an entrepreneurial leaning.

In a recent Op-ed Aleeia states "Educators are at the forefront of nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs. When teachers bring an entrepreneurial spirit into the classroom, they promote creativity, critical thinking and they inspire students to explore new ideas and take risks. These skills are essential not just for starting businesses, but for any kind of innovation and civic engagement that moves society forward. Teachers with an entrepreneurial mindset demonstrate the values of lifelong learning and adaptability to technological advancements. They show their students that education and creative problem-solving go hand in hand."

Well this group is a Southeast Queens staple. Whenever I'm looking for a local business or service, BlaQue Resource Network is my go to! The admins are also very helpful and supportive. I'm very grateful have to BRN, it just makes my life easier.

Liza Colon
I found this group through my neighbor who is one of the founders. Through the group I found many resources, especially during COVID when they had the produce giveaways that was so beneficial and helpful to the community and definitely much needed. My daughter Linda Derry volunteered with the group when she was a high school student at many events and also expanded her entrepreneurship of her photography business. We have met many people, businesses and supporters. They are definitely a great community asset.

Genea Ryan
I can always come on here to find help with anything and find out what free events are going on.

Amanda Christine
This group has helped me find a job, donate items, helped me research programs, guided me to BoBs for goods and service. Truly a one stop shop for POC and the black community.

Black Resource Network (BRN), is the best thing that ever happened to Facebook. I have needed services in the moment and the beautiful folks on BRN never failed.

However my most memorable post and experience on BRN was on May 16, 2021. I was sitting in church thinking where are all the good men?

Service was ending so I decided to petition my request to God about a suitor. I boldly asked my question in BRN but as if " it was for a friend."

The post received hundreds of responses. I sat in my car for over 2 hours just responding.

Unbeknownst to me a rather charming and handsome man saw right threw my quirkiness and messaged me privately. Not really knowing how to use Facebook I didn't respond until 3 days later.

To my surprise he replied back. We messaged each other and exchanged numbers.

We spoke for several weeks until we agreed to meet face to face. We went on the most beautiful and carefree dates.

They ranged from picnics and concerts in the park to Waterfalls, beaches and cool restaurants. We took our first abroad trip together in October to St. Croix. In February of 2022 we flew to Jamaica to celebrate my birthday and then he proposed to me.

Of course I said YES!!! God had answered all my prayers. After we got engaged we became 1st time homeowners in August of 2022 and on July 29, 2023 we were officially married!!

Who knew asking a simple question would yield me a strong, handsome, loving and equally quirky husband. We celebrated 1 year of marriage this July.

I first and foremost thank God for hearing me and sending me the best love of all but I also thank the creators of BRN. COVID kept everyone inside. As an introvert I don't go out unless it's work or church so this platform made room for all possibilities.

It's not a dating site in the least. It's all about networking but May 19, 2021 changed my life forever. So thank you BRN!! Please continue to serve the great folks of Queens, NYC!!!

While there are brilliant persons on the Autism Spectrum celebrated today, very little media stories focus on people, especially women of color. Our co-publisher's new bio-pic "nZinga's Spectrum In 3D," is a moving and inspirational documentary on how a young Black woman RISES to overcome her challenges.
