Kamau's Question: Kash, can you tell me a little about your background? Like where you grew up and maybe went to school?
Kamau's Question: Why do you think showcasing Black Excellence is important or so essential in our community?
Kamau's Question: Can you tell us about some of the things you look for to acknowledge a person for Black Excellence?
Kash's Answer: When we think about who to honor it has to do with energy, impact, and mission. These are people who help a lot of people, inspire a lot of people, and overall embrace our core values.
Our core values are execution, because: you can have a great idea and never act on it. These are people who actually do; the next one is abundance. So: these are people who are not crabs in a barrel.
They know that your success doesn't take away from their success, and they fully understand that - we can all win. There is space for all of us to make a million. There is space for all of us to live our wildest dreams.
They're not threatened by other people's success. The last core value is empowerment, so you have to actually help people, especially our people - get into a better situation.
Kash's Answer: I'm Queen's native-born and raised. Born right here in Jamaica Hospital.
I always make the joke that I was born in Jamaicam because both my parents were born in the island of Jamaica. I grew up in St. Albans and went to school at St. Catherine's on Baisley. I went to high school at Cardozo, in Bayside, and then college upstate at Cornell University.

Kamau's Question: Who or what inspired you to showcase and award luminaires at your Black Excellence Gala in March?
Kash's Answer: It was actually the people that we awarded during our first gala. I was a part of Recessionproof, a business mentorship led by Marcus Barney, that helps primarily melanated people learn about credit, entrepreneurship, and ways to make additional income. I was in charge of hundreds of people and with that I needed a lot of help and the community definitely showed up and showed out.
They shared their knowledge for free, and gave their time because they truly wanted to see everybody win. To show my appreciation for pouring into us I wanted to turn around and poured into them as well.
So it really started out as a thank you appreciation event. So many times we wait until someone's no longer here to give them their flowers. Then we say all the good things that they've done for us, or to speak on the impact they've had in our lives.
I wanted to make sure that I was giving people their flowers while they were still here. It's still very important to me to show appreciation because a lot of the times when you serve communities and people - it feels like it's a thankless job.
It feels like you're doing it in vain. Very few times people will tell you the impact, but just hearing one those stories keeps us going.

Kamau's Question: Why do you think showcasing Black Excellence is important or so essential in our community?
Kash's Answer: It's essential for us to see examples of success that look like us. This is because it just makes it more tangible, more attainable, and more real. It also expands what you think is possible for your life because it's already been done.
When somebody breaks a barrier a lot of people follow right behind them because they know it's possible. So for us, it's essential to see these examples.
It helps to: one spread awareness of what people are doing; and two to inspire others to do amazing things. This is because it is seen as possible despite everything that we face and everything that we go through - to do amazing things.

Kamau's Question: Are there missions, goals and actions that you would like the Black Excellence Gala awards to Inspire from attendees?
Kash's Answer: Every year we create really powerful rooms full of people who want to make the world a better place. They want to also make life better for our people.
So when you come to the Black Excellence Gala, we want you to network. We also want you to get to know people.
So when you come to the Black Excellence Gala, we want you to network. We also want you to get to know people.
We want you to actually let people know what value you can provide as well, so that we can all become stronger together. There's always amazing food, music, and drinks (Shoutout to D'USSE) and we have a great time. But you really want to leave with some value outside of a wonderful night out.
Kamau: When is the next Black Excellence Gala? What is the best way to contact you and RSVP for the event?
