Rae Reeves (Left) and Kamau Austin (Right)

Kamau: Can you tell us a little about your background and life growing up in Southeast Queens.

Rae's Answer: Queens is home! I was born in East Elmhurst, and grew up in Queens Village. I attended P.S. 134Q, P.S. 176Q, I.S. 59Q, and spent my freshman year at Jamaica High School.

Trips to the Wonder Bread/Hostess Bakery, dinners at Richards Place II, and family functions at Thomasina's Catering Hall are vivid memories. My mother, a Jamaican immigrant, and southern-rooted father always instilled education and respect into my siblings and I.

My family moved to DeKalb County, Georgia in 2007. After holding administrative, management and law enforcement positions, I returned to Queens in 2017.

Kamau: What inspired you to go into your present resume business?

Rae's Answer: I have invested my career in excelling as a workforce development and training pioneer in government and private sector agencies. I started my career as a Human Resources Receptionist in 2018 where I had the opportunity to review resumes, sit on interview panels and orchestrate hiring pools.

I conceptualized my business idea in late 2019. During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, I took the initiative to speak to job seekers outside of my workplace and began to outreach within my community.

With The Great Resignation shifting entry level to executive professionals nation-wide, the demand for career services emphasized to me that the need for a robust resume is everlasting. I believe that when the climate shifts, career growth and skill-building continues.

Kamau: What is the name and services you offer in your business?

Rae's Answer: I am a proactive Workforce Development Specialist, Meta Community Manager, member of the accredited National Resume Writers Association, and proud owner of the black owned microbusiness - Resumes by Rae.

One of my clients coined me “a masterful wordsmith.” Resumes by Rae is your one-stop shop for professional multi-level career writing services, including resume and cover letter composition, resume building workshops, and job search asssitance.

I provide services to everyone from high school students to healthcare workers, retirees to justice involved individuals among others.

Kamau: What is the uniqueness in your business in contrast to similar businesses in the resume field?

Rae's Answer: Customer service is an integral aspect to my business model. I provide personalized experiences and incorporate client involvement.

In contrast to web-based/digital resume building services, I take pride in offering regular communications and real-time updates. My clients should have full trust in me.

Keeping that at the forefront of my mind, everyone deserves a resume that has the power to change their lives.

Kamau: Recently, I read that (AI) Artificial Intelligence is very impactful on resume analysis today. Is this true? How so?

Rae's Answer: While AI and ATS are used similarly to analyze and scan résumés, I have mixed feelings about utilizing AI to build résumés. I stand behind résumé creation the traditional way - organizing your work history and highlighting your accomplishments as you see them.

The use of AI, especially in this digital age, can be a quick, painless way for job seekers to ensure they hit all the marks the ATS should pick up. Thus, pushing candidates to the top of the list for consideration.

However, the touch of a traditional résumé that accentuates our own words and examples still reigns. Professional ŕesumé writers will still be in demand when AI experiences glitches and malfunctions.

Kamau: Can you tell us about some of the challenges you've had in business and how did you overcome them?

Rae's Answer: The biggest challenge I have faced is marketing and growing my presence on social media. Social media is saturated with business owners in the same space. The Great Resignation and thereafter, shifted the way we work and how we want to work.

There are several professionals in this industry whom I am fortunate to collaborate with. We learn from one another and brainstorm ideas to offer unmatched services to our audiences.

Kamau: What is the best way to contact you?

Rae's Answer: The best way to contact me is via email at info@resumesbyrae.com

Kamau: Can you tell us about some of your goals and plans for the future of your business?

Rae's Answer: I want to empower minds of new job seekers and strengthen the confidence of seasoned professionals by cohesively compiling one's accomplishments and community impact. I believe showcasing out best selves, with digital and paper resumes, will catapult workforce longevity and individual success.

I would love to offer more inclusive services such as mock interviews, LinkedIn optimization, and ultimately career coaching/consulting. With expansion and demand, I forsee securing an office space to act as an employment hub.

This facility would offer job search assistance, trainings, GED/HSE courses, digital learning workshops and free business attire. Creating a judgement-free space where Queens jobseekers can feel comfortable getting these services would be my greatest accomplishment of all.
