Kamau: Can you tell us a little about your background and life growing up in Southeast Queens?

Earl's Answer: I am a lifelong resident of Jamaica, Queens, NY, and I was raised as a catholic. I started grade school at St. Monica's which is now York College.

We moved to Cambria Heights, and my life changed being the only African American family in that Caucasian neighborhood. My sister and I integrated Sacred Heart elementary school, which was one hundred percent (100%) white population.

We often hear about Rosedale, and the racial strife but Cambria Heights, was worst and occurred a decade before Rosedale. I graduated from Sacred Heart in 1969 and went to St. Pascal Baylon High School.

It was the closest Catholic high school in the area and attracted most of the Catholics from all areas of Jamaica, Queens, and every other elementary school which did not have a high school.

Kamau:  What years did you attend St. Pascal Baylon?

Earl's Answer: I attended St. Pascal's from 1969 to 1971 and then I transferred and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. I knew many people from all over Queens, and was happy at St. Pascal's because everyone got along with one another -  which was quite different from elementary school.

The reunion will also be a 50th year anniversary for the class of 1973 of which I am a part. I am glad that many of us are still on this earth in good health and happy.

Kamau: What were three (3) or so of your fondest memories of St. Pascal Baylon?

Earl's Answer: I am small in stature but enjoyed playing basketball, running track, and going to dances or parties everywhere in St. Albans, Cambria Heights, and Hollis, etc. I have met many friends from all parts of Queens who I am still in contact with today.

Kamau: What inspired you and your committee to do a Reunion this year?

Earl's Answer: St. Pascal's turned out many well rounded students who are successful today whether they remained in New York or relocated. The reunions have taken place since the year 2000 every four or more years.  This gives a chance for friends to reminisce and share memories.

The reunion is a way of bonding again and reuniting with some who have made lifetime friends. The last reunion was in 2017 to the Bahamas where previously it was held in Charlotte, Maryland, and a cruise.

We are lawyers, doctors, Reverends, professional singers, teachers, and social workers who began their career in Jamaica, Queens, NY.

I am one of a committee of five which includes: Michael Pitter, Claudia Wilson, Loretta Watts, and Christina Miller.

Kamau: Can you tell us about some of the exciting and fun things you and the committee will have for the alumni to experience during this reunion?

Earl's Answer: The reunion will allow time for trips to Manhattan, Long Island, visiting relatives and a Meet and Greet at the Crowne Plaza.  It will also include a ceremony with food - drinks - and dancing at the New Hyde Park Inn.

We have asked former teachers to join us along with presentations from various classmates those who are well known.
