Statement From Senator James Sanders Jr. One Year After The Murder of George Floyd

State Senator James Sanders Jr. said: “Today on the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd, we take time to reflect on the injustices committed in our society by members of law enforcement against people of color.

This tragic murder of an unarmed man by a now former police officer did not have to happen. For those of us who watched the infamous and horrifying video of Derek Chauvin with his knee on George Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, there are no words – just shock and disbelief. This is not an isolated incident.

Today as we remember George Floyd, let us also remember to honor the lives of Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Daniel Prude, Adam Toledo, Ma’Khia Bryant, and the countless others who are no longer with us due to inappropriate police action. We must support legislation like the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act so that this type of loss of life never happens again.”

Article On NYS Senator James Sanders' Legislation On Elder Abuse, And Veteran Suicide Continues Below...

Senator James Sanders Jr. today saw two important pieces of his legislation unanimously pass the senate. The first bill (S5196B) requires the Office for the Aging to develop and provide elder abuse prevention training to train senior service centers and contractors in the detection and reporting of elder abuse in consultation with the Office of Children and Family Services.

The second bill (S4093) establishes September twenty-second of each year as a day of commemoration known as Veteran Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day.

State Senator James Sanders Jr. said: “Our elders have given us so much. It is our duty to protect them because they are such a vulnerable population, which unfortunately makes them the victims of abuse and scams."

He added, "As a Marine Corps Veteran, I am especially proud to be raising awareness about the all too prevalent issue of veteran suicide, in the hopes that we can encourage more service members to get the help and resources they need to prevent loss of life and to remember those that unfortunately were not saved."
