I joined with my colleagues Council Members I. Daneek Miller and Selvena Brooks-Powers to celebrate the grand opening of a new vegan Caribbean soul food restaurant and pizzeria - Real Veggie Café - in South Jamaica. Led by Chef Hulando Shaw, Real Veggie Café will be a first-of-its-kind restaurant in Southeast Queens.

The celebration of this small business grand opening comes as small businesses citywide embark on a post-COVID-19 rebound. Chef Hulando worked throughout the pandemic to address food insecurity by donating sustainable and healthy food options for seniors, first responders, and families in need along with organizations like Southeast Queens U.P. Front and Queens Together.

Vaccines for Homebound Individuals
 
The City's in-home vaccination program, which had been on a pause along with all J&J administration in New York City, will resume using the Moderna vaccine starting this week.

Screening calls for verifying eligibility have resumed, and New Yorkers interested in receiving an in-home vaccination can sign up at nyc.gov/homebound or by calling 877-VAX-4-NYC.

Many people are worried about the COVID-19 vaccine. My office is committed to ensuring that you have up-to-date information on vaccine safety, effectiveness, and accessibility.

What is the COVID-19 vaccine?
There are three FDA-approved vaccines being administered in the United States - the Moderna vaccine, the Pfizer-BioN-Tech vaccine and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Each is highly effective for preventing illness in people who are exposed to COVID-19. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require an initial shot and a booster shot about 3-4 weeks after the initial shot, and both use messenger RNA to help your body build a natural immunity to COVID-19. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a single dose vaccine.

Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?
Yes. Firstly, the vaccines cannot give you COVID-19 as they do not contain live or even weakened versions of the virus. Secondly, these vaccines were evaluated through the same rigorous procedures used to test the safety and effectiveness of all vaccines, with tens of thousands of doses administered in the trial period alone. Since then, nearly 185 million more doses have been administered to frontline healthcare workers, senior citizens, and others.

But, like with every type of vaccine, it's common to experience mild side effects like injection-site swelling or soreness. This means your immune system is working. No serious side effects were observed during the trial period. Healthcare providers track vaccine reactions and are always prepared to assist anyone in the very rare instance of an allergic reaction.

Was the vaccine developed too fast?
mRNA vaccines have been studied since the late 1980s, so once the COVID-19 virus' genetic code was made available to researchers in January, scientists began working on these vaccines. The majority of their time over the past year was spent ensuring that these vaccines are both safe and effective.
