THE QUEENS ARTS FUND WILL AWARD OVER $590,000 TO LOCAL ARTISTS AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, AFTER A 17% INCREASE IN FUNDING FROM THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS OVER LAST YEAR

The Queens Council on the Arts’ Queens Arts Fund grant program supports community arts programs and new work by individual artists in Queens.

Deadline to apply for all three Queens Arts Fund grants is October 29, 2019.
For more information, please visit https://www.queenscouncilarts.org/qaf/

QUEENS, NY Queens Council on the Arts (QCA) is pleased to announce that the Queens Arts Fund (QAF) will distribute $590,260 in grants to individual artists and nonprofit organizations – this is following a record year where QCA supported the largest number of grantees to date. In 2019, QCA awarded $527,600 in grants to 104 individual artists and 84 organizations for the creation of arts and cultural programming for the borough of Queens.

Applications for 2019 QAF grants may be submitted online until Tuesday, October 29, 2019.

The increase in available funds for local artists and arts organizations is due in large part to additional support from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), whose funding for QCA’s artist grant program increased by 17% over last year’s total, and 3.5 times the amount provided in FY17. This increase, which has allowed QCA to provide larger grants to more artists, is thanks to continued support from the Mayor and City Council. Support for local artists and creators is a key recommendation in the CreateNYC cultural plan.

2019 FREDERICK DOUGLASS GLOBAL FELLOWS DEVELOPING INCREASED INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE THROUGH SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN LONDON
Third cohort of Global Fellows walk in the steps of Frederick Douglass, who lived and lectured in London in 1845.
Nationwide -- The 10 meritorious freshmen and sophomores from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) who were selected to be part of the third cohort of the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship program are wrapping up their intensive study abroad program at CIEE's Global Institute in London. They have spent the last four weeks participating in an experiential program designed to foster a global perspective and strengthen each student's leadership and intercultural communication skills through intentional programming, bolstered by targeted intercultural support and guided reflections.

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, named in honor of the African-American author, orator, abolitionist, and international statesman Frederick Douglass, is a collaborative initiative created by CIEEand the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) to increase access to study abroad for MSI students. The fellowship, which is underwritten through sponsorship and exhibitor fees from CIEE's annual conference, covers all program fees and travel costs for 10 outstanding students chosen for their high academic achievement, communication skills, and service to others.

"Taking advantage of London's multicultural identity, its history, and its current moment in time with Brexit looming, we've designed a curriculum that encourages not just academic growth, but personal growth as well," said the program's director, Dr. Keshia Abraham.
The Frederick Douglass Global Fellows explored a new country and culture, touring the Brixton area of London with a local guide, going on a study tour to Belfast, and participating in a community engagement day in Hackney. They met with artists, activists, and academics, diving into Brexit proceedings, and participating in a workshop with world-renowned poet Dorothea Smart. Throughout all of the activities, there was a focus on helping students develop skills necessary to effectively share their intercultural experiences within their respective communities when they return to their home campuses.

A (JEWISH) PUBLIC ENEMY NO MORE? -- A BLACK-JEWISH DIALOGUE AND HEALING THAT IS 30 YEARS OVERDUE

Nationwide -- Thirty years ago, Professor Griff was kicked out of the legendary hip hop group Public Enemy for allegedly making anti-Semitic remarks. Last spring, Griff openly addressed those remarks with members of the Jewish community for the very first time.

Professor Griff regularly travels with Khalid el-Hakim, founder of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, based out of Detroit, MI, and in March of 2019, the two men spent the day at Congregation Ohev Shalom in Wallingford, PA, welcoming and leading community members through the Black History 101 Mobile Museum.

The historically powerful and culturally dense display of artifacts covers the eras of slavery, Jim Crow, Civil Rights, Black Power, sports, politics and Hip Hop. The museum's "Signature Series" exhibit features over 150 original artifacts signed by historical icons including: Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Mary Mcleod Bethune, Paul Robeson, Cab Calloway, Barbara Jordan, Adam Clayton Powell, Shirley Chisholm, Huey P. Newton, Angela Davis, and Colin Kaepernick.

Community members engaged Griff and Khalid in conversations on some of the very difficult material in the exhibit, many not knowing the nuanced history of oppression African Americans endured not only during slavery but through the Jim Crow era and up to present time. Tears flowed from one visitor who was shocked to see sheet music from the 1920's and 1930's with prominent Jewish entertainers Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson in blackface.

The visitor commented, "I never thought of that history in this type of way. This is an eye-opening experience."  Controversy surrounding the legacy of blackface recently came under public scrutiny after Gucci and Prada released products featuring images of blackface.

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY "BACK TO NATURAL" TO SCREEN IN BROOKLYN, NYC

Brooklyn, NY -- Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward announced today that her documentary, Back to Natural, has been invited to screen at the Black-owned and operated, Stuart Cinema & Cafe located at 79 West Street in Brooklyn, New York. Stuart Cinema, owned by Emelyn Stuart, is dedicated to supporting independent filmmakers.

Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker and clinical psychologist, Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward, Back to Natural reveals the shocking truth about hair, politics, and racial identity in Black communities and beyond. Filmed in the US, France and South Africa, this documentary is a powerful call for healing that takes a grassroots approach to exploring the globalized policing of natural Black hair, universal aspects of the Black experience and the "New" Natural Hair movement.

This film, which played a critical role in inspiring NYC to develop guidelines protecting citizens rights to wear their natural hair in school and at work, is a unique blend of entertainment, history, social justice and healing. It's director, Dr. Scott-Ward, says of the film, "It's never been more critical to have films that help us understand ourselves and our communities through a compassionate lens. It's all too common, globally, for students to be kicked out of school and adults to be prohibited from employment because of their hair! It seems crazy to say but this is a hidden phenomenon that most people outside of the Black community have no idea about!"

Publicity Campaign Strategies For Small Businesses

Publicity Campaign Strategies For Small Businesses - Making Business Sense - Talking Business with Phil Andrews

Publicity Campaigns for Small Businesses have the ability to win the war for Small Businesses over a period of time. Brand awareness takes time and specific strategies for any small business to reap its benefits.

Publicity campaigns should be based on specific goals of each particular business.  Every business should map out a well-designed plan to take advantage of newsworthy items that appear in their business on a regular basis.

The problem that arises with most small businesses is that they are so consumed with many of the day to day activities that public relations campaigns get put on the back burner. Publicity is one of the areas where most small businesses can get more bang for their buck.

Where else can a business get more for their buck in exchange for a little time invested, and creativity?  Some years ago I sent an article to a magazine by the name of Shop Talk Magazine, and they featured a story about the Haircut Hut Barbershop Franchise which I ran for a period of ten years. The cost of the three page story was a typed letter and stamp.

The magazine space in which the article appeared was valued well over ten thousand dollars. Some areas in which publicity is often overlooked in small businesses are anniversaries, addition of key employees, renovations, new websites, new locations, new product lines, strategic partnerships, etc.

THIS 25-YEAR OLD TURNED DOWN $4.4M AND NOW HER COMPANY IS VALUED AT $7.3M

Nationwide -- Based in the heart of Alabama, Tesix Wireless, a fast growing Black-owned telecommunications firm, wants to provide more flexibility and feature pack plans by eliminating everything millennials hate about their wireless plans and delivering more of what they want, and this even includes zero fees and taxes.

Launching just eight months ago the company's value quickly rose by $1.4M after recent investments from the likes of Ladarius Gunter (former-Green Bay Packers Cornerback), Shaun Hamilton (Washington Redskins Linebacker), Ayodeji Olatoye (Atlanta Falcon Cornerback) and many others. With these investments, the company's value rose to $7.3M from its original $5.9M at time of launch.

Before it's launch, the company received a $4.4M acquisition offer to be disbursed over four years because of its extensive waitlist, investments, and other notable factors; in which was turned down.

Found and lead by Chaymeriyia Moncrief, the 25-year-old African American Alabama native says the offer was not impressive because she understood the value her company held.

TITO JACKSON STEPS OUT ON VOCALS WITH NEW SINGLE "ONE WAY STREET"

Los Angeles, CA -- Legendary guitarist, Tito Jackson, considered the quieter member of perhaps the greatest musical family in the history of music - The Jacksons, has stepped out on vocals with the release of his new single "One Way Street."

In just one week, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's cut was the second most added song at radio stations across the country.

"One Way Street" features the remix from hot producer Gregg Pagani, who also worked with hit-makers Charlie Wilson ("Uncle Charlie," "Just Charlie," "In It To Win It") and Johnny Gill ("Game Changer," "Soul Of A Woman"), and is considered one of the hottest producers today. The track is the tale of a bad romance, with finger pops and a haunting background leading into a memorable hook, and Tito's lead.

"Performing beside my brothers on stage has been a wonderful blessing for me, for decades. Introducing "One Way Street" at this time, in my career, is an ideal platform for me to share my solo project with our loyal fans, and hopefully gain new ones along the way," stated Tito.

Senator James Sanders Jr. Condemns Mass Shootings, Trump’s Racist Rhetoric And Lax Gun Policies

State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) today condemned the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio that occurred over the weekend, and cited concerns that President Trump’s racist rhetoric against minorities and people of color may have been responsible for spurring at least one of the two incidents.

President Trump has divided this nation. His hateful messages against immigrants, minorities, women and any group that is not white men, is disturbing. It has caused the spread of white nationalism and set race relations in our country back several decades. That combined with his lax views on gun control have led us to this moment.”

The alleged gunman in the shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, who killed 20 people and injured a dozen more, Patrick Crusius, 21, described his racist motive for the crime in a manifesto in which he stated, “this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” Many Mexican people reportedly cross the border to go to that Walmart to do their shopping before returning to their country. The alleged gunman also stated in the manifesto that his views “predate Trump.” However, they were probably exacerbated by Trump’s words, Sanders contends.

Debut of “The Ave” by ArtSite Awardee and Local Jamaica Artist, Jason Anthony Lalor In Southeast Queens

Jamaica Queens, NYC --- Walking down 149th Street or Jamaica Avenue after sunset, you will now stumble upon an eye catching new film installation highlighting the energetic Jamaica landscape.

ArtSite awardee and local artist, Jason Anthony Lalor’s new video installation is now on view every night from 8:30 pm to midnight for the month of August. In order to complete his vision, Jason partnered with local businesses CH Martin & Rincon Salvadoreno Restaurant to debut his film “The Ave” which aims to document and preserve the diversity and energy of Jamaica, while encouraging passersby to connect these spaces to their own memories and experiences.

As a local Jamaica resident, Jason wanted to focus on his home and create a film for his fellow community members. His project is an observational documentary of Jamaica, both of the Avenue and the neighborhood, showcasing his daily commutes through the area. His idea was inspired by the rapid gentrification of the neighborhood and the importance of creating visual records of Jamaica’s changing landscape.

“I want people to stop, ask about the work, maybe share their memories of Jamaica and discuss how the neighborhood is changing. I also want people to walk away with a sense of the inherent beauty and impermanence of our neighborhood as we know it. At the very least, I hope people enjoy the views of the Avenue.” – Jason Anthony Lalor

“The Jamaica Center BID is pleased to support the Queens Council on the Arts in bringing this projected installation to Jamaica Avenue. Along with our many cultural partners in the neighborhood, the Jamaica Center BID seeks to amplify Downtown Jamaica as a central hub for art and culture in Queens, in addition to being a wonderful place to shop, play and do business.

This installation from artist Jason Lalor is just one of many unique exhibits that has integrated art, business and community in creative and unconventional ways on our commercial corridor and we are thankful that restaurant Rincon Salvadoreno and the department store, C.H. Martin, elected to provide space for this exciting new art installation.” – Jennifer Furioli, Executive Director - Jamaica Center BID
