OPT-ED: FORMER AFRICAN AMERICAN PARTNER ALLEGES DISCRIMINATION, CORRUPTION AND COVER-UP AT PIERCE BAINBRIDGE BECK PRICE & HECHT LLP

New York, NY -- Don Lewis is pursuing legal action against his former employer for illegal termination of his employment and defamation of his character. During Lewis' time with Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP ("Pierce Bainbridge"), he says that he received reports from the firm's bookkeeper detailing serious financial misconduct piled on top of a dysfunctional firm culture. Prior to last week, Lewis' multiple claims included Managing Partner John Mark Pierce, General Counsel Carolynn K. Beck, Partner Denver G. Edwards, his former partners at the firm, as well as Michael D. Yim, a partner at - so-called "Tradition of Excellence for 150 Years" - Putney, Twombly, Hall & Hirson LLP ("Putney Twombly").

On Friday, Mr. Lewis added a defamation and Judiciary Law 487 claim against Littler Mendelson P.C. ("Littler") - one of the largest employment law firms in the world - based on the gross misconduct of partner S. Jeanine Conley. Lewis alleges that Pierce Bainbridge, Littler, and Putney Twombly "acted in concert to defame Lewis on a massive national scale in order to cover up Pierce's financial malfeasance and in order to silence Don Lewis."

Lewis, a double Harvard graduate, who was the only African American attorney and partner, blew the whistle on illicit and immoral activity. Pierce reportedly engaged in financial self-dealing, inflated case values to dupe firm investors, unethically provided gifts to manipulate firm clients and siphoned funds from the firm's bank account.

BLACK ENTREPRENEUR TO USE HIS OWN MONEY TO PROVIDE 1,000 TEACHERS' CLASSROOMS WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Nationwide Freddie Figgers, founder and CEO of Figgers Communications, recently had a chance to speak at a public school in Florida. While he was there, he met a 68-year old teacher that was spending her own personal money to buy supplies for her classroom. Freddie said to himself, "How can a teacher focus on education while they are underpaid and being forced to use their own money to supply their classrooms?"

This one particular teacher was living pay check to pay check, and she was 4 months past due on her home and car payments. But she still was spending her own money proudly to support her classroom. As beautiful as this gesture was, it was also a big issue. Freddie immediately jumped into action with hesitation to save this teacher with her current situation. 


He says he simply could not stop thinking about all the other teachers that must be in her same position. Too many teachers are being forced to come out their own pocket to supply their classrooms.

FORD FUND ANNOUNCES TWO FINALISTS IN THE MEN OF COURAGE CINCINNATI BARBERSHOP CHALLENGE

* Finalists selected to compete in the Men of Courage Cincinnati Barbershop Challenge

* One winning barbershop will receive a grant of $10,000

* An additional $5,000 grant will be awarded to the barbershop applicant that proposes the most innovative community idea that includes partnership with a nonprofit group

Cincinnati, OH -- Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, announced today the two finalists that will compete in the Men of Courage Cincinnati Barbershop Challenge. Barbershop finalists Razor 1 Kutz and Precision Blendz will compete over the next three months to win a $10,000 grant based on their implementation of initiatives and activities that educate and reinforce positive narratives around African American men.

"We extend congratulations to the two barbershop finalists," said Pamela Alexander, director of Community Development, Ford Motor Company Fund. "We are excited for this new and innovative chapter in the Men of Courage program. These barbers are advocates and ambassadors in their community and we look forward to working with them."

Razor 1 Kutz, owned by Donald Hudson, is one of the two finalists selected. "It feels great to be selected as one of the finalists in the Men of Courage Cincinnati Barbershop Challenge," says Hudson. "It's a blessing that all my hard work is being recognized and now we have a chance to show it." Their plan is to create a tutorial space for neighborhood kids using an underutilized area in the lower level of the building.

FIRST BLACK-OWNED AND OPERATED MARKETPLACE IS COMING TO MIAMI

Overtown Marketplace, the country's first Black-owned and operated marketplace, is coming to one of Miami, Florida’s oldest and most historically significant neighborhoods. A soft launch event on August 17th is open to media and special invitees, and will feature a wide range of shopping, entertainment, food, and more.

Miami, FL -- Urban Philanthropies, in cooperation with Urban Pulse Direct, has announced the grand opening of the Overtown Marketplace on August 24-25, 2019. Prior to the grand opening event, the organization will host a soft launch for media and special guests on August 17 from 5-9 p.m. featuring live music, poetry, art, shopping, and more.

Both events will be held onsite at the Overtown Marketplace, located at 1000 NW 2nd Ave. in Miami.  Both events will celebrate the revitalization of the Overtown District, one of Miami's oldest and most historically significant neighborhoods.

Adjacent to downtown Miami, the area was originally segregated from the rest of the city and was limited to housing black workers at the turn of the 20th century. As time went on, immigrants from The Bahama Islands, then later Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and other countries arrived in the area, serving as the city's hub for skilled labor.

HBCU CULTURE WEEKEND & BATTLE OF THE BANDS TO KICK OFF AUGUST 23-24 AT SIRRINE STADIUM IN GREENVILLE, SC

The inaugural event, hosted by Kingdom Plug, will showcase the majesty, pride and artistry of some of the top collegiate marching bands in the southeast region.

Greenville, SC --  An estimated 30,000 people will gather in downtown Greenville, SC for the inaugural HBCU Culture Weekend & Battle of the Bands scheduled for Friday, August 23rd and Saturday, August 24th. The event, organized by Kingdom Plug, is in partnership with Visit Greenville and will take place at Sirrine Stadium (100 Cleveland St. Greenville, SC 29601).

The HBCU Culture Weekend will have a host of attractions including a FREE fan experience with food trucks, vendors, health screenings, HBCU Step Show, Block Party, College & Career Fair, and Live Concert featuring Grammy Nominated & Stellar Award Winner, Jekalyn Carr and National Recording Artist, Bernard Williams. The main event, HBCU Culture Battle of the Bands, will feature South Carolina State University, Benedict College, North Carolina A&T University, Fort Valley State University, Alabama State University, and Talladega College.

Greenville has a strong and rich Battle of the Bands history, which dates back to close to over a decade. With that history, HBCU Culture Weekend will spark a new tradition here in Greenville and will unite the city for a day of safe, family-friendly fun and entertainment. A portion of ticket sales and sponsorship dollars totaling an estimated $150,000 will be donated and distributed to the six participating HBCU band programs for scholarships and educational experiences. Artist Commissioning Program Presents World Premiere of "SHOOTER,"
Experimental Theater Project by 2019 Awardee Yogi (Y?) Guyadin

Queens, NY—On August 3^rd at Jamaica Arts Center, artist and educator Yogi (Y?) Guyadin will premiere SHOOTER, an experimental theater project that explores complex power dynamics between gun violence victim and perpetrator.

Commissioned by the Queens Council on the Arts’ Artist Commissioning Program, the two-part project includes an exhibition demonstrating the collaborative work Y? has done with local community members and a culminating, autobiographical performance that tells the intense and heart-wrenching narrative of how guns impacted a young man growing up in Jamaica, Queens.

“My main inspiration for this project came from wanting to explore how we all play roles of victim and perpetrator. This is not just a piece about guns, it is much deeper,” explains Y? Guyadin. “I chose to make it about gun violence because it relates to my personal experience. It was important to me to connect this personal narrative to larger issues that are plaguing the society.”
