State Legislators Call for Funding for Student Loan Consumer Assistance Program
Senator Sanders joined his legislative colleagues in calling for $1 million in the budget to launch a student loan consumer assistance program.
ALBANY, NY - Today a group of New York State lawmakers, led by the respective chairs of the Senate and Assembly Banks Committees, and the chair of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, cited findings from of a recent U.S. Department of Education Inspector General report in calling for the creation of an independent, statewide student loan consumer assistance program, including a toll-free “Help Line,” to assist borrowers in New York fight back against deceptive student loan industry practices.

Under the Trump Administration, protections for student borrowers have been steadily eroded. Last year, the student loan ombudsman at the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau resigned to protest sweeping changes at the Bureau that he said protected “the interests of the biggest financial companies in America” to the detriment of borrowers.

As the federal government has retreated from its oversight and enforcement responsibilities, states have had to step in with legal action against loan servicers who mislead borrowers, illegally drive up repayment costs and make serious errors in the processing of student loans.  Only a few months ago, a lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General resulted in a $9 million settlement against Conduent Education Services for misleading borrowers in New York State.

ROSA PARKS CHARITY FILES US SUPREME COURT PETITION CHARGING CORRUPTION IN PROBATE COURT (DOCKET NO. 18-1152)

Detroit, MI The charity organized by civil rights icon Rosa Parks has filed a petition for certiorari in the United States Supreme Court citing gross corruption in the probate court located in Mrs. Parks' adopted hometown of Detroit, Michigan. The petition focuses on a dispute concerning the whereabouts of the wool coat worn by Mrs. Parks at the time of her arrest in Montgomery, Alabama on December 1, 1955.

The famous coat was slated to be part of an exhibit of thousands of civil rights artifacts to be presented by the United States Library of Congress in December of this year. The coat will not be part of the exhibit due to the corruption of Judge Freddie G. Burton, Jr. the probate judge presiding over Mrs. Parks' estate in the Wayne County Probate Court.

The estate of Mrs. Parks, who died in 2005, recently entered its 14th year of administration. Almost immediately upon commencing probate, Judge Burton disregarded Mrs. Parks' express wishes for the management of her estate by her friend, Elaine Steele, and appointed two court cronies as administrators of her estate. By 2009, these cronies managed to completely bankrupt Mrs. Parks' simple and modest estate by charging excessive administration fees that exceeded the gross value of these estate.

ENTREPRENEUR DESIGNS MULTILINGUAL PROGRAM AND CREATES 6 BOOKS TO HELP BLACK CHILDREN LEARN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES

Charlotte, NC -- Shylene Santiago, a self-published author and homeschool mother of eight, has created six multilingual books that bring excitement, song, and dance to many different languages. "The mission of these multilingual books not only help children gain the confidence of speaking in new languages, it also helps parents strengthen their language skills as well," Santiago said in an interview with Black Connections.

In six short months after the launch of Learn A Language 4 Fun, LLC, her business has gained a tremendous amount of exposure and support from educators and parents all around the world.

Santiago's youngest was born with a heart defect that required her to step away from her teaching position with Bright Horizons. This sacrifice was necessary to give young Emilio the attention and care he needed.

While staying home and focusing on his health she started to homeschool her other children and designed a Spanish lesson plan. The wealth of diversity in their own neighborhood inspired her nine-year-old to request that multiple languages be added to their daily lesson plans.

"I want to say 'Hello' and 'How are you?' in their native language to make them feel comfortable living around us," urged Anita.
