FROM SILENT FILM TO BLAXPLOITATION: THE FILM DETECTIVE CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH 70 YEARS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA HISTORY

Witness 28 films in cinematic history that led to the iconic Oscar-winners and blockbusters we see today.

Rockport, MA -- The Film Detective, a classic film and television company that restores and distributes vintage films for today's cord cutters, announces a lineup of prominent African-American films in honor of Black History Month.

Beginning February 1st, the Featured category on the company's app will refresh daily, providing a range of films from the 1920's to the 1990's to highlight the achievements in African-American cinema during the last century.

Dominating the lineup are four Oscar Micheaux films including Within Our Gates, Micheaux's 1920 film, considered to be the earliest known surviving film directed by someone of African-American decent. Other Micheaux titles are Murder in Harlem (1935), Lying Lips (1939) starring Edna Mae Harris, and God's Stepchildren (1938), at once praised as a masterpiece and denounced as racially stereotypical. For those who want to learn more about the ground-breaking director, The Film Detective has produced an original tribute available on the app that provides a short history of Micheaux's career.

BALTIMORE ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCES $1,000 "BLACK FUTURES MICRO-GRANT" AWARD TO GREATER BALTIMORE "CHANGEMAKERS"

Baltimore, MD --  Building Black Futures Together is their motto. CLLCTIVLY.org, a community-based organization in Baltimore, Maryland is spearheading an effort to show the tremendous impact Black lives are having throughout the Baltimore community. Each month, CLLCTIVLY.org will award a local individual or organization with a BLACK FUTURES MICRO-GRANT - a no-strings-attached $1,000 grant for changemakers serving Greater Baltimore. The deadline for the first submission period is January 31st, followed by a two-week, community-wide voting period. The Award and $1,000 check will be presented on February 22, 2019. For more details, visit BlackFuturesGrant.org.

"CLLCTIVLY.org is very excited to offer the Black Futures Micro-Grant. Baltimore has amazing, dedicated individuals and organizations in our community who are making a difference without a spotlight, and often under resourced. We want to show our appreciation and motivate others to also use their time, talent and resources to strengthen our communities," states Jamye Wooten, the founder of CLLCTIVLY.org.

Wooten hopes that CLLCTIVLY will help bring unity and foster collaboration among the many community organizations doing great work, but often working in silos. "Community-based organizations often work in silos. Silos lead to fragmentation and fragmentation leads to duplication and wasted resources - such as time, talent and treasure," says Wooten.

Wow I was both surprised and honored when a business person and artist Ms. Adrienne Whaley, founder of the Queens Center Of The Arts, told me we were selected for an  "Outstanding Community Service Award."  Actually I laughed in disbelief. I laughed under the incredulous irony of the moment.

See we started a local blog for our community to challenge the major media usually primarily covering our area with negative or sensational news stories. My daughter and I covered over 1,500 community events, Black businesses, and economic development stories before making a dime for our efforts.

80% of the time we didn't even get a thank you. But we did it as an act of love. We made a little money from a few of my clients in the area, that I had before we did any serious publishing to make some income.

But we did it because we were tired of the negative major media coverage of the area. What was so disappointing was the Southeast Queens, NYC area is historic in a few ways.
