The idea for Miss Zee came about in 2011, after creator and illustrator, Michelle Smith's daughter Zee referred to her hair as "boring." Her daughter had also began depicting all of her personal drawings as white characters.
After seeing her personal drawings, Michelle found that Zee was also gifted a coloring book depicting white princesses. Rather than throwing it away, Michelle taught her that it was okay to color them black and draw on afros. Michelle then realized that there should already be a coloring book with characters like this. After not being able to find one, she illustrated her own and launched it, along with a small line of other items which was received with praise and accolades.

According to CEO of Miss Zee, Michelle Smith, "Our job is to create quality items that these girls can see themselves in, in a way that they will actually want to use them. Sometimes simply seeing yourself on a product isn't good enough; it needs to be on a product of quality that stands out. Children can be really picky and will often gravitate away from things that they don't consider cool."
The staple character from Miss Zee has often be likened to Hello Kitty, only in human form. The company has been able to create a character that is not just recognizable but relatable. However, Miss Zee products are different because the company strives to create one-of-a-kind, eye-catching, high quality products that can make little girls proud of themselves.
"One of the best comments that I've ever received, which I will never forget, was when a mother said that while she and her daughter were looking at our products, her daughter said something along the lines of, 'These make me feel important.' That's why we do what we do," Michelle says.
Since its launch in 2012, the company has been receiving hundreds of emails from customers who cannot stop lavishing their products with praise. Some tell of how the lives of their children have improved with a tremendous boost in self-esteem since they started using Miss Zee products. Those who were not happy with their skin color, hair or heritage are now happy to be themselves and Michelle is proud to admit that “Seeing my products fulfill their purpose is a great feeling."
About Miss Zee:
Miss Zee was born out of a young mother's frustration of not seeing child-like characters that resembled her daughter, Zee. After Zee began showing a dislike for her natural hair and coloring all of her characters white with straight hair, her mother decided that she needed to step in and do something. Since there were virtually no characters sold in stores that Zee could relate to, her mother began teaching her how to color and draw on ready-made characters to look like her.
Zee's mother then realized that her daughter needed a character that she could already relate to, so she created one for her. Starting out just a coloring book, it transformed into manufactured coloring books made widely available for purchase due to an overwhelming amount of requests by those who shared similar stories and then into other items like backpacks, decor, apparel and accessories.
Miss Zee is a character that comes in many skin shades, hair styles, hair colors and eye colors in order to represent the diverse looks of little girls. Her main focus is to uplift them and make them feel special even in a world that may sometimes tell them otherwise. Miss Zee is here to let them know that they are perfect exactly the way that they are. She also teaches them how to embrace the uniqueness of not only themselves, but others..
