Article On Alderman Vernon Matthews' Community Work And Run For Mayor Continues Below...
Alderman Vernon Matthews is passionate about becoming mayor of this city because he wants to continue to make changes for the better of the community. Waterbury is a very diverse city but has never had a Black mayor.
For Vernon Matthews, nothing is impossible. Waterbury is the same city that produced the first Black Teacher Of the Year in America, Jahana Hayes. She also just became the first Black woman to become US Congress Woman to represent Connecticut.
Alderman Matthews hopes to work with individuals like Jahana Hayes to improve the educational system, to increase the hiring of minority teachers, and to bring attention to the neighborhoods and communities that are not receiving enough funding to support youth programs.
