STUDYING BLACK IDENTITY IN SOUTH AFRICA TRANSFORMED MY WORLDVIEW

Of the more than 330,000 U.S. students studying abroad, only 6.1 percent are African American and 10 percent are Latino. This is one in a series of articles by students of color who are breaking down barriers by studying abroad thanks to the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, which awards 10 full scholarships a year to students at Minority Serving Institutions. These students will periodically share their stories, hopefully inspiring others to apply.

By Chiagoziem "Sylvester" Agu, Albany State University

Nationwide  My name is Chiagoziem "Sylvester" Agu. I'm 20, a sophomore of Albany State University, majoring in biology, a member of the Alpha Phi fraternity, with aspirations of pursuing a medical degree in cardiology.

A few months ago, I had an extraordinary experience studying abroad in South Africa as a Frederick Douglas Global Fellow. I spent four weeks in Cape Town on a full scholarship, studying political blackness, black consciousness, and the complexities of colored identity. Every day, I was exposed to something different. Although the knowledge I was acquiring was both intimidating and scary, I also found it empowering. This is my story.

It was 2001 when my young eyes first glimpsed America. I had flown with my family over 6,000 miles from my birthplace in Nigeria. I attended pre-K in the United States, but after a year, we flew back home. I didn't return to America until 2012 when I arrived in Georgia for high school.

Before enrolling in high school, my knowledge of America came from sitcoms and talk shows like Maury and Jerry Springer, which I later learned spread stereotypes and false narratives. In Nigeria, I was on track to graduate high school at 15. When I came to America, I was 14 and technically a high school junior, but I was enrolled as a freshman. I studied hard academically but didn't realize how much I had to learn culturally. It was actually a blessing for me to have the time to assimilate and spend time with American youth in high school.

Curtis Claytor and his Black History Trivia Book. To Order A Copy Click Here
Nationwide --  The Ultimate Black History Trivia Book by Curtis Claytor has two thousand multiple choice questions and answers in four categories: History; Music; Sports; Television, Arts & Literature!

Most of us learn in school about Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, and George Washington Carver. But who was the woman who refused to sit in the Jim Crow section of a train in 1883 or the name of the Black man who invented the gas mask and the three-signal stoplight? Not only will one learn about inventors and the heroes of the black struggle; one will learn about the horrific racial violence that is seldom mentioned in history books.

Do you know about the race riot that resulted in the murder of over 200 blacks and the destruction of more than eleven hundred black businesses and homes? What about the race riot that began when a black youth who ventured into the “white section” of a lake drowned after angry whites pelted him with rocks?

THE ORIGINS OF BLACK MUSIC REVEALED IN NEW BOOK, "BLACK AMERICAN HISTORY, FROM PLANTATIONS TO RAP CULTURE"

Nationwide -- The new book Black American History, from Plantations to Rap Culture is a must-read for readers who may have an avid interest in the origins of Black music in various genres, especially rap music. "At every stage of their integration on American soil, Black people have created the kind of music that reflected their social and economic integration as well as their state of mind," writes internationally acclaimed author Pascal Archimede, about his latest book.

Black American History, from Plantations to Rap Culture, or black America explored through its institutions and artistic productions. Widely accessible, this story of millions of American citizens is told from their first steps in the New World to today through a cultural prism both original and essential. From the transatlantic slave trade to the ecclesiastical pillar, through abolition, school and politics, this work suggests reading the African- American music as a succession of existential movements. The author analyzes the codes of this extraordinary art, which has always been the highest form of testimonials of Men's earthly passage. What challenges did black Americans have to face when they created blues, jazz, rap?

Pascal Archimede embarks us on a timeless journey between past, present and future; between identity and captivity; between disappointment and progress towards the liberation of a Nation.

BLACK-OWNED FASHION BRAND, BELANI KNOX, SOLVES TALL WOMEN'S #1 COMPLAINT

New company's line of leggings already a hit with consumers.

Atlanta, GA -- What is the #1 complaint of tall women standing 5'10" and above? According to Belinda Mays, it is that most retail outlets do not adequately provide quality and stylish clothing for the long-legged female shopper. Until now, Belani Knox, based in the Atlanta metro area, is promising to end the frustration associated with shopping while tall.

"Standing 5'10" tall myself, one thing that became very clear to me at an early age was that the fashion world loves to use tall girls to promote fashion. However, when those clothes got manufactured and returned to market, they did not fit my frame," says owner and Chief Tall Chick in Charge, Belinda Mays.

"Quite simply, I've dealt with flood buster pants all my life, and that's why I decided to start this business," she jokes. "Casual fashion has moved toward athleisure wear and that's why we launched with leggings. Our leggings are 'fun'ctional, fashionable, made of quality fabrics which are fade resistant, won't shrink, and are super soft.

AFRICAN AMERICAN FATHER USES PSYCHOLOGICAL TRICK TO MAKE HIS CHILDREN SUCCESSFUL

Nationwide --  Maceo Smedley, the father of Maceo Smedley III, a young actor who has stared in hit show such as Underground and Netflix's All About the Washingtons, reveals his psychological trick that makes his children successful. Not only has he admitted to using this trick with his own children but admits to using it on students in his class as a public school teacher for over ten years and no one ever discovered his secret. Now he has figured out how to use his trick and conceal it in a children's book called Why Are You So Smart?

Parents should be advised that this is not just another children's book. This book contains a warning about this psychological technique called Afformations®, a special form of affirmations, that supposedly helps develop a successful mindset. Parents need to know that they will utilize this trick with their children simply by reading a book to them.

Smedley believes that Afformations® are the key to allowing children to increase their quality of thinking, and by asking life-affirming questions this book leads children on a journey to rethink the way they view themselves and their worlds around them. "This book is an excellent gift for boys and girls, and for new parents, and is one of the best books for children ages 3-7 according to several school teachers," says Smedley.

CHRISTIAN REGGAE RAPPER RELEASES HEART-WRENCHING BOOK FOR SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS

Nationwide --  Within the pages of Tyrone Short's book, "Speak Up Child and Be Saved," readers will find a book depicting what it means when a young girl loses her innocence, which is very precious, and when it's taken against her will, more than just her innocence can be lost. Innocence lost without justice gained is a double jeopardy leading to further loss.

Today's society is filled with these unheard victims. The 'Me Too Movement' continues to expose many for their inappropriate behavior, but these victims may feel what happened to them goes a lot deeper. This book is designed to reach them.

After wandering through the desert for over thirty-five years, Tyrone Short now serves as a witness to the amazing grace of the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Tyrone Short is a writer and Christian Reggae rapper (Prince Trog).
