MAJOR GENERAL MARCELITE JORDAN HARRIS, FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN FEMALE MAJOR GENERAL IN US MILITARY, PASSES AT 75

Nationwide -- Major General Marcelite Jordan Harris passed September 7, 2018 at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL, where she was taken while on a Caribbean vacation. Though her death was sudden and unexpected, she was surrounded by loved ones.

General Harris was born January 16, 1943 to Cecil Oneal Jordan and Marcelite Terrill Jordan, both deceased. A native of Houston, TX, General Harris graduated from Kashmere High School before enrolling at Spelman College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1964. She received an honorary doctorate of letters from Spelman in 1999 and earned a B.S. in Business Management, University of Maryland University College.

General Harris, fierce military leader, devoted wife, loving mother and nurturing grandmother, touched the lives of many throughout her illustrious career. She was married to Lt. Col. Maurice Harris, USAF (deceased) and raised two children - Steven and Tenecia, during her years of active service. Being a mother, wife, and Air Force officer were roles that defined who she was, she told Ebony in 1995.


From receiving her commission through Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, TX in 1965 to her crowning glory appointment by President Obama to the Board of Visitors of the Air Force Academy, 2010-2016, she was on an ambitious and purposeful mission - to be the best. She approached each opportunity with strength and determination as she overcame many racial and gender roadblocks. "It was not easy," she reflected in the Ebony interview.

UNION DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO VA OFFICIAL WHO DISPLAYED PAINTING OF KKK LEADER

Washington, DC -- Union officials are calling for a full investigation into a senior Veterans Affairs official who prominently displayed a picture of a Ku Klux Klan leader in his office, accusing department leadership of ignoring the problematic behavior.

"The prominent display of images of Confederate leaders in the workplace is never acceptable," said J. David Cox Sr., national president of the American Federation of Government Employees. "The actions of this official cross the line, and we’re calling on the VA to get to the bottom of what's going on within their leadership at this facility." 

On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that David Thomas Sr., deputy executive director of VA’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, had a picture of Nathan Bedford Forrest - a Confederate general who became the white supremacist group's first grand wizard - displayed in his office for years.

FREE NATIONAL PRE-LAW CONFERENCE OFFERS ASPIRING BLACK LAWYERS UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN INFORMATION, RESOURCES AND CONNECTIONS

Boston, MA -- The 14th National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair 2018, sponsored by AccessLex Institute, is the nation's premier information-sharing and networking empowerment event for aspiring Black lawyers. MEET THE HBCU GRADUATE, CLASS OF '99 AT ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY, WHO RECENTLY CO-HOSTED THE UNIVERSITY'S 50TH GOLDEN CLASS REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 1968

Nationwide --  Elizabeth City North Carolina's own Trequita Overton, ECSU 1999, Interim President, Atlanta Metro Alumni Chapter 2018, along with "Mr. Talk" Otis R. Strong III, '76 recently hosted the Elizabeth City College (ECSC 1968) Seniors Golden 50th Meet and Greet Galas on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Walter N. Ridley Student Center on Elizabeth City State University's (ECSU) campus and at the Hampton Inn, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

ECSC's 1968 seniors concerns in absentia, Butler L. Sharpe III, Riverwoods, Illinois and Raymond M. Davis, Baton Rouge, Louisiana - the table topic discussion during the event involved the following questions:

(1) Will you continue to support our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), namely ECSU?

(2) Will you advise high school graduates, military veterans, junior college transfers, the undecided and the millennials of existing generations ... Gen Y or Z, to attend ECSU and, or, other HBCUs?

(3) How valuable is the HBCU degree? Memory mobility practices for an aging generation, "Are you yet holding on?"

On the following day, ECSU Homecoming Parade Saturday, October 27, 2018, the ECSC 1968 Throws were seen on the front of an ECSU 1983 graduate's "oversized" trucks. Mr. Timothy R. Rodgers, '83, of Newport News, VA, is a proud American veteran owner, chief executive officer (CEO) and chief financial officer (CFO) for this trucking company of military veterans. He partners with his brother, Reverend Gregory Rodgers, who is a driver and the chief operating officer (COO) of transportation and logistics.

During the ECSU Homecoming Parade, Reverend Gregory Rodgers (Williamston, NC) was driving the blue ECSU Viking throwed-oversized truck; driver Don May (Greenville, NC) was driving the white ECSU Viking "Big" truck, with Dr. Charles L. Singleton, '68 as its passenger.

BLACK-OWNED TOY COMPANY INTRODUCES FIRST EVER SERIES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MERMAID PRINCESS DOLLS 

Nationwide Just in time for #BlackGirlsRock, #BlackGirlMagic, and every other hashtag that celebrates Black women, one Black-owned toy company has just released what they are calling the first ever series of African American mermaid princess dolls. The 12 inch dolls are sisters, and are named Stella, Bella and Abriella. They represent royalty, beauty, fashion, and pride.

The dolls were created and are sold exclusively by Toys Like Me, and are the latest addition to the company's already popular collection of backpack dolls and other plush toys for African American children. The idea was conceived by entrepreneur Dante Lee, an African American dad who noted that the toy aisles in most major retailers lack diversity. This inspired him to launch his own line of toys that Black children can resonate with.

COLLABORATIVE WWI CENTENNIAL PROJECT BRINGS FORGOTTEN STORIES FROM THE BLACK PRESS ON AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE WWI ERA TO A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY

Hidden voices. Buried history.

Upon their return from war, black veterans resisted second-class citizenship. This black sergeant stands defiantly before a white private during the Chicago Race Riot of 1919. According to historian Chad Williams, the "presence and inspiration of black veterans, particularly those of the 370th Infantry Regiment was critical to black Chicagoans forced to defend themselves from white aggression."

Nationwide -- Imagine yourself standing on a street corner in the South Side of present day Chicago. There doesn't seem to be anything extraordinary about this spot - there are buildings, cars driving by. Then suddenly, your surroundings change. You're in the middle of the 1919 "Red Summer" when post-World War I social and racial tensions boiled over into violence. You're witnessing a confrontation outside of an old lunch room and cigar shop.

You're looking at an old photo of a black WWI veteran and a white militiaman. You're looking at the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, by the end of which 38 would be dead, more than 500 injured and 1,000 black families left homeless.

Forgotten stories like these are being made available to students nationwide through immersive storytelling technology thanks to a collaborative partnership with Google Expeditions, the Friends of the Victory Memorial and the West Virginia University Reed College of Media Innovation Center.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: 

On Halloween, Love, The Vote, and the Mythic Presumption of American Innocence

=> I love Halloween.  I’m proud of my friends who represented at the end of last month with imaginative stuff.  Especially the parents, who led by example and created a magical space for their children's self-expression and imagination.

=> Churchill once said, "Democracy is the worst form of government, with the exception of all of the others."  I have been, in this life, a colleague, a competitor; an adversary, a best friend, an acquaintance; a contrarian, a cheerleader; an employee, an employer; a child of the Bronx and a citizen of the world; a Sagittarian (sun), Gemini (moon), Libra (rising) and Scorpio (Venus); a son, grandson, great-grandson, nephew, and brother--along with an uncle, cousin and frightened/confused but loyal, committed and proud father.

And while all of these relationships (and others) have made me what I am, and I treasure them all, nine years with my wife, Alexis has taught me that, on a bad day, marriage can be the worst of human relationships there are--with the exception of ALL of the others.  On a good day, to say nothing of great...

Like most people, I usually don't talk about hard times on social media.  Aaron Sorkin set it best: social media is a giant digital stage upon which everyone is "living their best lives" a la The Oprah; performing in their own eternal Halloween costume & role, with no one being their authentic self (at least on purpose). (I [obviously] am a musician who loves being a faux investigative journalist online.)  Hard times, or how they make us feel, for example, are not a part of the established narrative of most people on Facebook.

But I usually don't discuss the great times with my wife either; not even to say how they simultaneously overshadow and remove the shadows of bad times so often, so routinely, so magically, as to make me laugh at their memory.  I am a verbose dude, but there aren't words to accurately describe how my marriage has been a personal Balm in Gilead for my soul. Not even any of the roles I play online have scripts that poetic. If you ask me about my wife and my face lights up, trust: I'm a trained actor, but I'm not THAT good.  In my eyes, when you say her name, you are seeing joy.
