NYS Senator James Sanders Sounds Off On Proud Boys' Hate Speech And Violence

From The Office Of NYS Senator James Sanders, Jr.

New York State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) said:

"I am disgusted by the recent outbreak of violence, which occurred on Friday near the GOP’s headquarters in New York City known as the Metropolitan Republican Club. It happened following an event, where the guest speaker was the leader of the Proud Boys, a violent, alt-right, pro-Trump group known for its racist, homophobic and misogynist behavior.

While the First Amendment right to free speech allows unsavory groups like the Proud Boys to spread their propaganda, the GOP did not have to give them a platform to convey their message. It was an extremely poor decision on their part, if the Republicans want to paint themselves as a mainstream organization that represents all people. However, some say the strategy of the GOP is to use dog whistles and racist fear-mongering to bring out their vote. If that’s the case, it would explain why the Proud Boys were invited to spew their venom.

Members of the Proud Boys were caught on video assaulting anti-fascist protesters after the event. At one point a dozen of them were kicking a man and shouting anti-gay slurs at him while he was curled up in a fetal position on the floor. The leader of the Proud Boys, who was reportedly present during the incident, seemed to justify the violence by stating that anti-fascists had created a “climate of fear” by vandalizing a GOP clubhouse.

FAMILY PRACTITIONER, DR. KELA HENRY RELEASES NEW SELF-HELP GUIDE/ NOVEL THAT TEACHES TEENAGERS ABOUT DECISION MAKING

Atlanta, GA After meeting hundreds of African-American, Latina and Asian teenage girls throughout her career, author Dr. Kela Henry was compelled to write a book for teen girls that emphasizes the importance of decisions. Told in narrative form, Nia & The Numbers Game: A Teenager's Guide to Education, Relationships & Sex (published by BTH Creations LLC and Lulu) is a new user-friendly guide for adolescent girls that helps them to learn about the changes occurring in their bodies and how to best navigate the circumstances of their teenage years.

Readers follow Nia (Swahili for purpose), a typical African-American girl, on her life’s journey. From changes in her body, to the joy of first love, to the pressures to have sex and on top of all that, applying to college, the book explains to readers how everyday choices directly impacts one's future. Although Nia makes mistakes along the way, Dr. Henry stresses the importance in how Nia considers and thinks about her actions rather than acting impulsively.

Real experiences shape the snapshots into Nia's life, which act as catalysts for frank discussions about important topics like STDs, pregnancy and trust. Henry follows most of the chapters with a "Let's Talk" section, during which her professional and reassuring voice explains the full context of complex situations and provides facts, medical information and advice.

Community Calls for Answers in Case of PA Police Custody Death of Queens Army Veteran
Questions linger say family members and elected officials
Queens Village, NY — Parishioners, local residents, and elected representatives gathered at Maranatha Baptist Church this past Sunday to show solidarity with the aggrieved family members of Everett Palmer Jr., who mysteriously died after two days in police custody at a Pennsylvania jail, and echoed their call for a grand jury investigation into the matter.
Last April, the 41-year-old Queens native, U.S. Army veteran, and father of two surrendered himself to authorities in Lancaster County to answer for a 2016 DUI charge, and was subsequently arrested and transferred to a prison in nearby York County where he died 48 hours later.
A coroner’s report issued immediately after his death suggested Everett died from injuries suffered after beating his head repeatedly against his cell room door but was later contradicted by autopsy results that listed the cause of death as “complications following an excited state, associated with methamphetamine toxicity, during physical restraint.”

Faith Leaders Learn Key Tips for Money Management at Senator James Sanders Jr.'s Community Clergy Breakfast

Guest speaker, Jamal Smith, Senior Financial Counselor with Urban Upbound gave the faith-based leaders important information about money management.

State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) held his monthly Community Clergy Breakfast on September 27, 2018 at Faith Assembly Church in Richmond Hill with guest speaker Jamal Smith, Senior Financial Counselor with Urban Upbound, an organization dedicated to breaking cycles of poverty in New York City public housing and other low-income neighborhoods.

The topic for this month's breakfast was money management for faith-based leaders and the presentation included information on how to create a budget, how to prioritize financial goals (short-term and long-term), attitudes about money, household goals, separating wants from needs, and assessing your current financial situation.

"I think everyone in this room already knows the importance of saving money," Senator Sanders said. "It can provide financial security in case of emergency situations, help achieve goals such as home ownership and most importantly lead to the creation of generational wealth. What we may not know, or what we may be struggling with, is how to save money, and that's what we are here today to learn."
