Queens Council on the Arts is pleased to announce the second year of the Artist Commissioning Program, an innovative program that democratizes the traditional art commissioning process. This program will continue to create the next generation of art patrons by inviting Queens-based community members, or “art producers,” to select four artists to receive a $10,000 commission.

These art producers may be Queens community members, art appreciators, or artists passionate about supporting art making. Throughout the program, art producers will serve as resources for selected artists, engaging with them in monthly events such as art salons, artist talks, and professional development training.

This year’s program will focus on Jamaica and Flushing, Queens, organizing much of the program’s events there, and giving preference to applications based in these two neighborhoods.

Reflecting on the role of the art producer, 2017-18 Art Producer Brendez Wineglass says, “Being an art producer is a really exciting experience. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to select the artists, and to build out the arts and culture matrix in Jamaica, Queens.”

ACP’s funding priority also distinguishes it from other arts opportunities. Successful artists will present a fresh perspective by telling untold stories, defying the cultural mainstream, and privileging underrepresented identities. Artists may be Queens-based choreographers, composers, and playwrights. Each of these producers will be commissioned to create a dance, music score, or theater script.

“In most artistic ventures, you don’t have community engagement like this,” says 2017-18 ACP Awardee in Playwriting Judith Sloan. “The idea that [the art producers] can say ‘we want you to do x, we chose you to work with us to use your skills to meet our needs’…it changes the dynamic… There’s something really challenging about that as an artist, but also really exciting and refreshing. It has changed me as a human being and an artist.”

The Queens Council on the Arts will be holding information sessions for prospective artists and art producers in Jamaica and Flushing beginning this week. Candidates may register online for the following times:

Wednesday, September 12 from 6 – 8pm at Flushing Town Hall
Monday, September 17 from 6 – 8pm at Hall of Fame Studios Jamaica
Tuesday, September 25 from 6 – 8pm at Flushing Library
Tuesday, October 2 from 6 – 8pm at King Manor Museum

The deadline for artists and art producers to apply is Friday, October 12 by 11:59pm.
