Malacia Anderson Creates Trendy African Adorned Fashions Fit For A Queen

By Kamau Austin And Malacia Anderson
Malacia Anderson AKA Li Li
Malacia N. Anderson AKA Li Li is the unassuming queen of women's african inspired fashion sold via e-commerce.  Perhaps the hard work she has endured to become a very familiar face in online fashion has kept her humble and down to earth.  She was once a former seamstress who hadn't sewn for quite a while.

However, she has more recently become a sophisticated and regal like inspiration for trendy and directional custom fashion on social media.  From tireless efforts of online promotion on social media her clothes and modeling aplomb have made her a ubiquitous personal clothing brand online.

Recently Etsy, the online shopping platform, did a video interview with her after she reached over 2,000 sales on their platform.  I contacted the queen of motherland imbued trendy fashions as she is busy preparing her Spring and Summer Fashion lines.  She took time out of her intense custom order schedule to answer some questions about her journey to success.

Kamau For the Scoop: Can you tell us a little about your background and life growing up in New York.

Malacia: I grew up in Roosevelt, Long island, where I still reside.  I learned how to sew at the age of 10 at my local 4-H, under the tootalage of Sadie Taylor.  My interest in sewing came from my mother who would make dresses overnight for me and my sister to wear to school.

Kamau For the Scoop: What inspired you to go into your African inspired clothing business?

Malacia: Starting my Etsy shop as a seller was a goal of mine for some time.   I realized that goal as a birthday present to myself on 8/6/13.

Prior to I was a seamstress of many years but had stopped sewing for a long time.

I chose African fabric to use to make my clothing designs because I love my culture and its vibrancy.  I wanted to marry that with the vintage styling that I love.

Kamau For the Scoop: What is the name of your company and services you offer in your business?

Malacia: Li Li's Creations, is my dba my company name is Li Li's Creative Design.  I am an online clothing brand offering one of kind, made to measure African inspired clothing. My designs are made by hand by me.

Kamau For the Scoop: What is the uniqueness in your business in contrast to similar businesses in the area?

Malacia: The uniqueness of my business, from others, is that it is - made to measurement and not pre-made to standardized size chart or manufactured.

Kamau For the Scoop: Can you tell us about some of the challenges you've had in business and how did you overcome them?

Malacia: My biggest challenge has been turning my once side business into a fully functioning to scale business. When you do something on the side along with a 9 to 5 job the practices in it are more tailored to a hustle.

Changing to a full time entrepreneur means from calculating profit margin to marketing everything becomes more critical to the success of the business.

Kamau For the Scoop: What do you need to improve in your business?

Malacia: Once I have gotten it to scale that would put me in the position to hire seamstresses. In the meantime I am looking into hiring an intern to assist with some of my day to day tasks.

Kamau For the Scoop: Can you tell us about some of your goals and plans for the future of your business?

Malacia: My goal is to continue to grow my business and to expand into high end markets as well as my current market.  I am currently looking to add a bridal aspect into my designs as well as hiring interns and seamstresses as I grow.

Kamau For the Scoop:. What is the best way to contact you?

Malacia: The best way to contact me is via Etsy where a direct message can be sent to me at www.Lilicreations.etsy.com

Kamau For the Scoop: Thank you Malacia for taking the time to do this interview with the Southeast Queens Scoop.  We appreciate your creative fashion efforts and showcasing African culture in a positive light.
