Daymond "The Shark" John, Founder of FUBU, and State Senator Leroy Comrie Spread Christmas Cheer With Gifts For Area Children   

Southeast Queens raised business standout Daymond John, Founder of FUBU, along with newly elected Council Member Adrienne Adams, the NYPD, Toys For Tots, FUBUmobil and State Senator Leroy Comrie, recently sponsored the Hip Hop Summit Youth Council Toy Giveaway.  They reportedly were able "to distribute toys to kids at both P.S. 40Q and P.S. 48Q" according to Senator Comrie. 

Comrie went on to state "one of my office's greatest traditions is working with the community to spread cheer at the holiday to all families.  Moreover, the Senator stated "I am glad that these events are helping to secure a partnership between the Hip Hop Summit Youth Council, that they can continue to work together into the new year to provide scholarships, support, and mentorship to the students at these schools."

Columbus, Dawnell Jacobs, a local Georgia educator, has released her highest selling novel in bookstores, Amazon and on Kindle. Writer’s Digest has hailed her novel as "a classic love triangle" with a "satisfactory" conclusion.

Although unknown to most readers, the characters in her novel are based loosely on her own life. At 17 years old, Jacobs was homeless. Her mother, due to a mental illness, abandoned her and her three younger siblings (ages 3, 5, and 7) in the care of social services.

Saywalah Kesselly Shares The Vision Of The
 Southeast Queens Proposed Credit Union

Southeast Queens, increasingly is drawing a diverse population. However the area still is over 90% Black.  It also has a historic place in Black and US history in that it is the first large area in the US where the average Black income exceeded whites in the surrounding area.  With this heritage of economic progress there's no surprise that residents are extremely interested in homeownership and economic empowerment.

The Greater Jamaica and Southeast Queens area is also home to one of the largest concentrations of Black homeowners in the country.  However, Southeast Queens, homeowners experienced the largest amount foreclosures in NYC related to the Great Recession of 2008.

In has been known now that ethnic or interest groups who have been able to form lending organizations for homes or businesses like credit unions or microfinance business lending organizations have been able to accelerate their economic success.  For example there are nonprofits that have been able to give tens of billions of dollars to their ethnic groups like Accion and Grameen Bank (to Latinos and Asians respectively) with business loans.  In a similar fashion credit unions have been able to help members get less predatory lending for homes, cars, and even student loans than commercial banks focused on profit margins.

But what is a credit union and how can it help Southeast Queens?  According to Wikipedia "A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative, democratically controlled by its members, and operated for the purpose of promoting thrift, providing credit at competitive rates, and providing other financial services to its members."

Could a similar type of nonprofit financial organization help residents further economically develop Southeast Queens?  Enter Saywalah Kesselly, the catalyst behind the Southeast Queens Proposed Credit Union to give us the mission of the developing nonprofit finance organization.

Saywalah Kesselly - Saywalah graduated from the W.V.S. Tubman High School in Liberia in 1981, and immigrated to the United States in 1984 in search of higher education, graduated from Baruch College with a BBA degree in Economics in 1991. Currently, Saywalah is the Executive Director of the African Center for Community Empowerment (ACCE).

Saywalah started the ACCE, after some young people he personally knew were killed in senseless violence.  He started the Center to help young people excel in life.

He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Joseph P. Addabo Family Health Center, Farmers Boulevard Community Development Corporation and former President of the Board of Directors of Arverne Limited Profit Housing Corporation.

He is also the recipient of numerous awards including the 2005 Union Square Award, 2006 HBA / Times Ledger Newspaper “Community Impact Awards,” New York City Council Citations and many others.  These days Selwayla is very involved in the creation of a Proposed Southeast Queens Credit Union (FCU) to help bring about credit and economic development in the area. Our Associate Publisher, Dujon Ricks, caught up with Kesselly for a brief interview.

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- Honoring the 1st Black $Billion Dealmaker, upon the 30th anniversary of his historical deal that changed the face of America business forever. On November 30, 1987, Reginald Francis Lewis closed the $985 million leveraged buyout of Beatrice International Foods, which at the time, was the largest offshore transaction ever completed in the United States. The Wall Street move was celebrated around the world as the deal that made Lewis the first-ever African American billionaire business tycoon. Michael Milken was his investment banker, and the company made the Fortune 500 list.

The $Billion Deal opened the doors for more African Americans, women and minorities to play in the billion-dollar business league. The event also marked the founding of TLC Beatrice International Holdings, Inc., the first African American owned enterprise to break through the billion-dollar mark when it grossed $1.8 billion in sales on its first year. Washington, D.C.— Congressman Gregory W. Meeks today introduced House Resolution 655, which calls upon Congress to investigate sexual misconduct claims against President Trump. Regarding the resolution’s introduction, Congressman Meeks issued the following statement:

"At the beginning of this year, millions of Americans—men and women alike—flooded the streets for the Women’s March to protest injustice and sexism. They protested and lifted their voices in the tradition of trailblazing Americans like Sojourner Truth and Gloria Steinem. 2 Stop The Violence Women Leaders Spearhead Organizations To Increase The Peace and Help Stop Violent Crime in NYC

We constantly hear the question from conservatives and apologists for over aggressive police tactics, which too often result in deadly consequences, in the Black community - why don't Black organizations focus on "Black on Black crime?"  Well there are at least a couple organizations which do exactly that in the NYC.

These two groups Life Camp Inc., of Southeast Queens, and Street Corner Resources of Harlem, along with many other persons in the community have contributed to a deep drop in violent crimes in NYC especially over the last few years.  The number of gun related killings in NYC this year (2017) is under 300 in a city of about 8.5 million people.  And if current trends continue the year will close with it being the safest year in NYC for -  about 50 years!
