My soul looks back and wonders about the richness of our historic area in Southeast Queens. When I was a boy I lived right across the street from a business pioneer and one of the most successful black entrepreneurial endeavors in Queens' history. It's only fitting that I talk about our area and its distinguished legacy.

I remember the awe and inspiration I got from living across the street from the Wallace & Wallace fuel and oil related companies.  I remember reading how there were two synergistic businesses being run by the family business moguls of the Wallace & Wallace Oil and Fuel companies.

If memory serves me correctly one Wallace & Wallace company was in oil distribution and the other in fuel refinement. To be honest as a teenager I didn't know exactly how they made their money in the oil business but I was proud a Black man could run a community based business with worldwide connections and operations.

She's Gotta Have It

I remember quite vividly being excited reading about Spike Lee's new independent Black Film "She's Gotta Have It" back in 1986.  Also I remember reading about it in one of the large local papers when the New York Times and Daily News were the dominant media in NYC before the Internet. I was frenetic with anticipation!

The film release was a watershed moment for subsequent Black films.  It originally cost less than $185,000 and made over 7 million at the box office.  That was some return in investment even today for a film.

It was unheard of for a Black film back then!  The New York Times displayed the following response to the film's success.  "For an independent, shoestring production, this was remarkable. For an independent shoestring production by a black man about black people, it was astounding."

I couldn't wait to go see this pioneering film by this emerging director Spike Lee.  I rushed out to see the film.  After watching the movie I was happy this independent film was made although I was ambivalent about the timing of the subject matter...

De Blasio Talks About The Issues In Jamaica Queens

Eight-year-old Alayna Khan was one of hundreds of people who turned out for a town hall meeting with Mayor De Blasio Monday, and took the opportunity to tell him Baisley Pond Park needs some cleaning up. He responded with a promise of upgrades to the space, while also fielding questions on everything from education to housing and policing during the event.

She’s 8 years old and, at least for a few moments, she stole the spotlight from Mayor De Blasio at his town hall meeting with residents of City Council District 28 at August Martin High School in Jamaica Monday (October 16th, 2017) evening.

A nice new place for comfy soul food is Siblings Best Restaurant, at 187-30 Linden Blvd, St. Albans, NY 11412.   It is a nice quaint restaurant that sells soul food.  It does breakfast foods all day.

I enjoyed their waffles and turkey bacon.  I've eaten there a couple of times and the food is good and service is very good.  The owners are amiable.

While there are nice soul food spots in Southeast Queens many don't have comfortable seating. However Siblings Best is cozy and not usually crowded for seating yet.
