Making Moves Dance Festival is a unique annual opportunity for New York based emerging choreographers and dance companies to showcase their original works that span the globe and dance genres. The participating artists will not only receive a monetary award, but also be provided with access to rehearsal spaces and an opportunity to showcase their works during the day long festival.

This year, seven selected dance groups will present their works in two bills: a free afternoon outdoor presentation which encourages public participation and an evening stage presentation which features a commissioned work by choreographer Gabrielle Lamb.

Princess Grace Award-winning choreographer Gabrielle Lamb’s choreography blends technical virtuosity and visual poetry to investigate the complexities of 21st century lives. Via this commission opportunity, Lamb and her Pigeonwing Dance company will explore the tension between predictability and surprise, the pattern and chaos in nature, life and arts.

You may not have heard of Junior Bridgeman, but he was an NBA player for 12 years for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers.

Like all players, he eventually retired. But unlike most players, who, according to Sports Illustrated, go broke within 5 years after retiring, Bridgeman became much more successful after retirement than he was during his years playing basketball, building a $400 million fast food empire.

Success as an athlete

Bridgeman was born in 1953 into a blue collar family in East Chicago. He played basketball in high school and played guard and forward during college at the University of Louisville. After college, he was picked in the first round of the 1975 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, but was immediately traded to the Milwaukee Bucks for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. His athletic career was uneventful, but it was what he did after retiring that was so significant.

That is why two Nigerian sisters, Chinelo Chidozie and Ndidi Obidoa, have introduced a new skincare product line called Bolden USA - made specifically for people of color.

Rich in antioxidants, one of their products, Bolden Shea Oil, is a brilliant multi-tasker, moisturizing both dry hair and skin, while combating the effects of sun damage and aging. It contains a sunblock that goes on clear with no white streaking.

First State Bank was formed by a group of African-Americans in rural Virginia in 1919. Almost hundred years later, First State Bank is the last Black-owned bank in Virginia to disappear. What happened? And, what has happened to all of the Black-owned banks across the nation?

A story of survival

First State Bank had survived both the Great Depression and the Civil Rights era. The bank fought for civil rights, even paying bail for protesters who were arrested and building a park for black residents when Virginia denied them from using the Staunton River State Park. Black-owned banks like First State Bank also helped local farmers, and enabled the Black community to buy homes and even go to college.

Most 8-years old are in the third grade, and many of them are still struggling to read and write. But 8-year old Nia Mya Reese from Birmingham, Alabama has already written a best-selling book!

It all started in the first grade

Nia was just in the first grade when, as a class assignment, she wrote about something she was good at -- taking care of her annoying little brother, Ronald Michael.

Within two years, Nia turned this assignment into a bestseller entitled, “How To Deal With and Care For Your Annoying Little Brother.” It's now one of the most popular kids books on Amazon, and in addition to doing book signings all over the country, she has also been featured on CBS Evening News, NBC's Harry talk show, and in Stylist magazine.

Learn How Daymond John Went From Selling On The Southeast Queens Streets To Being A Global Business Icon by Kamau Austin.

Daymond John was born in Brooklyn and raised in Hollis, Queens.  His mother had some difficulty with making ends meet when she and his father and split up early in his life at about age 10.  Daymond has challenges with dyslexia which perhaps he has been able to use to his advantage by learning to use other forms of media rather than the printed word to promote his business ideas.

John, like a lot of young people in Hollis and Southeast Queens, was lit over the new musical art form exploding in "da Bronx," called rap or hip hop.  Hip hop had an urban realistic storytelling and hard core poetic edge.

He attended Bayside High School.  Later early on in his working career he waited tables at a Red Lobster restaurant while getting involved in clothing production and manufacturing of his clothing brand FUBU.
