Due to the real estate meltdown of 2008, Southeast Queens, was pounded considerably hard economically with a disproportionate amount of area homeowners literally and figuratively losing ground and their homes. Ironically, politicians are claiming record lows in unemployment and crime. If this is true our neighbors should be seeing more economic recovery.
Nevertheless, despite the claims of economic recovery, New York City, is also experiencing record highs in homelessness. Homelessness in New York shelters is being claimed by some sources, like the Coalition Of The Homeless, to have climbed 74% in the last ten years.
Against the backdrop of the attempt to recover from the real estate debacle of the last recession, and also the burgeoning homeless populations, is the massive development going on in the Greater Jamaica and Southeast Queens area (not to mention in Manhattan and Brooklyn). Increasingly our area is becoming a tale of 2 cities. One is enormously wealthy with the average midtown condo going for over 2 million dollars, and on the other end are the New Yorkers experiencing homelessness or near homelessness.
In Southeast Queens, and Greater Jamaica, we have to look at the policies of the local politicians and try to determine which will bring actual prosperity and economic recovery to local residents. We should be concerned about our neighbors living here now and not allow massive amounts of working class and middle class residents to be displaced by astronomical rising rents or gentrification. In short, our area is at a crossroads.

We also have the considerable decision to vote for the convening of the New York State Constitutional Convention called "con con" for short (on the back of the ballot). We get a chance only every 20 years to vote to change the Constitution in New York State.
I can't tell you how to vote but despite all the changes I feel we need in our area politically, with a GOP controlled State Legislature, and the anti-immigrant and ACA attitude by the party faithful, I will follow Leroy Comrie's advice and vote no for con con.
I also will be recommending Adrienne Adams to take the 28th NYC Council District Seat vacancy of Ruben Wills. Also I am endorsing and voting for Letitia James, for Public Advocate for the City of New York.
I also think the Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Melinda Katz, are doing a good job making sure all the developments in "Downtown Jamaica" and other parts of Southeast Queens also have affordable housing. So I would consider their performance respectively when voting for Mayor and Queens Borough President.
If you value your voice and the future viability of our community this election may be the most important in your lifetime. So please do your research and due diligence on the candidates and get out and vote. Here's a good synopsis of the voting choices in Queens.
