I was tired of all the negative news about the Jamaica Southeast Queens area in particular and the Black community in general. There was no balance. I wanted to show many of things the average Greater Jamaica, Southeast Queens resident was doing like working hard, raising a family, building a business, or uplifting their community.
The major traditional media basically covers Southeast Queens, an area of about 92% Black people, and largely people of color or ethnic minorities as basically people who suffer from substantial substandard lifestyle conditions. When you listen to the major or traditional media you'd think Southeast Queens is an area ridden with crime, murder, and poverty.
However, Southeast Queens is one of the largest areas in the country of Black homeowners, It is the first area in the US that average Black income exceeded whites, we are experiencing record low homicide rates, also business and economic development is very promising. But since the major media knows covering negative stories draws more attention than positive stories, therefore it uses Southeast Queens, as an area to be the poster child of everything challenging about living in Queens and New York City.
In short, the major media banks or profits off of the coverage of black social pathology or dysfunction. It defines the area by the lowest common denominator. Less than 1% of the population in the Southeast Queens area, who are involved with crime and social dysfunction are projected as the norm. Therefore the 1% are used to stigmatize the other 99% working hard to live a decent life.
While we may have to work harder, give more, and look deeper to get readers and draw advertisers the Southeast Queens Scoop, will work to build up the area and not tear it down. We will look to share the events, organizations, and people who work for community and economic development.
Sometimes we don't get reciprocal business or even a simple thank you. But we are still dedicated to the health, vitality, reputation, and economic empowerment of the area.
I want to thank our social media friends and moderators for sharing our stories and articles. They are too numerous to name. I want to thank friends and family for their patience and support for our efforts.
And finally I want to thank the team that helps keep the Southeast Queens Scoop operating on a daily basis including:
