New York, NY Assailing the patriotism of Black NFL players, slandering an African-American Congresswoman by falsely accusing her of disparaging slain FBI agents, defending confederate statues, normalizing neo-Nazis and white supremacists - adds up to a pattern that reminds some people of how far America has not come in its attempts to move away from the bad old days of Jim Crow.
It’s an issue on the mind of Peter Ford, a retired U.S. Army veteran and author of the timely novel My God! My Country, My Son (available on Amazon.com).
As a former public affairs specialist in the military and a well-established writer for magazine and newspaper articles published during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Mr. Ford decided to write a novel or screenplay as the best way to tackle the current issues of race, protests and patriotism.
The result was My God! My Country, My Son. Mr. Ford began by inventing Sergeant William Wanton, a highly decorated sergeant in the United States Army of the 1950’s, who feels a commitment to follow the law and serve his country. His son Will, however, is drawn to the nascent civil rights movement. Will’s decision to join the protests sets the stage for a fiery confrontation between father and son.
"For Sergeant Wanton, everything he believes and has worked for to become an African American officer in the U.S. Army is being threatened," Mr. Ford explains. "Faced with blatant racism from some of his superiors, and a son who is an embarrassment in Wanton’s eyes, he is forced to come to terms with what he truly believes. Better yet, he has to figure out how he will react along the way."
On the other hand, Wanton’s son feels an incredible sense of responsible to fight for his rights and those of others - despite his father’s opposition. Inspired by his highly passionate professor, Dr. Davis, Will sees little choice but to commit himself to the cause, despite his father's wishes.
"I want readers to understand the historic, racist legacy that Sergeant Wanton must confront," said Mr. Ford. "I want people of all color to understand the disparities in our great country and to identify the polarizing, racist rhetoric of some politicians, some military leaders, some media people and of course, the public provocateurs."
Mr. Ford says that he wants to immerse readers in this super-charged novel to heighten a level of awareness about civil rights and justice that remains just as relevant today
