David Austin (no relation to Publisher, Kamau Austin), is determined to offer healthier food options to people who love southern derived soul food in the largely Black American and Caribbean area. He wants people in our community to feel better and eat food that is cooked in love and concern for the residents of the neighborhood.
What would a good soul food dinner be without the perennial favorite fried chicken somewhere in the mix? David's Nothing Fried restaurant is taking a bold departure from mainstream southern fried dishes.
Nevertheless, Austin's utmost concern is about providing an excellent healthy product as a viable long term dining option in his community. David Austin, is taking this perspective with valid concerns especially given the higher incidents of high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues experienced by Black residents in Southeast Queens.
According to Eat Right, the digital publication of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, "Soul food is a traditional African American cuisine with roots in the Deep South. Typical dishes include fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, greens cooked with pork and many desserts. Traditional soul food can be high in calories, saturated fat, salt and sugar, which can negatively impact health. But you can embrace the healthier roots of soul food — greens, sweet potatoes and beans..."
Understandably Austin has experienced tremendous challenges. He has also had to deal with running a healthy soul food restaurant in a neighborhood that has a sizable Caribbean population. Therefore, he has had to deal with different cultural meal preferences.
However, word is getting out about his healthier soul food dining options, especially online where the lionshare of his sales are coming from these days.
He is riding the wave of people in Southeast Queens and Greater Jamaica looking to eat healthier. Sales are beginning to boom for this restaurateur!
David get's his recipes from his mom. They are family secrets. "We cook our food with the utmost love, care and high standards. We believe in running an excellent business in our community" says Austin.He delivers in his promising and unconventional soul food menu. His food is increasingly tasty as the eatery progresses. Another important characteristic of Dave Austin's passion for providing healthy meals is serving it at an affordable price point. His entrees start at $6.50.
The Turkey wings, seasoned to perfection, are simply superb at Austin's Nothing Fried, and is my favorite. The baked chicken is excellent as well.
The collard greens, seasoned with turkey, are delicious and sweet potatoes are tasty as healthy food choices. The meatloaf also looks very inviting as well.
