Impeding access to birth control directly targets more than 55 million women across the country, and avoidance of a formal review before unilaterally imposing such a catastrophic change risks the health and safety of too many of them. State regulations in New York have been in place since early 2017 to ensure that any federal repeal of this important right would not affect most female in-state residents. Knowing that reproductive autonomy remains an unrelenting challenge, the New York City Council has worked to ensure that all women in need are able to access free and low-cost birth control options.
This has included the allocation of $800,000 for long-acting, reversible contraceptives through the Young Women’s Initiative (YWI), and advocacy for the baselining of this funding, so that free, effective contraception will remain available to all women in NYC, regardless of insurance.”
