By Kamau Austin with Margaret Johnson-Hodge

Southeast Queens raised Margaret Johnson-Hodge, is another example of the successful, creative, and talented persons from our area.  In addition to having great social activists like Roy Wilkens, sports stars like Jackie Robinson and Joe Louis, jazz greats like Count Basie, Lena Horne, and John Coltrane, and many hip hop artists and business moguls like LL Cool J, Russel Simmons, and Daymond John, we can add a great highly regarded author like Margaret Johnson-Hodge to the list.

Margaret, is the author of eleven published novels, contributor to three anthologies, including the highly successful “Proverbs of the People,” and author of a chapbook. She also will be releasing two additional books “promised” (Young Adult) and “Penny Candy Dreams” (Contemporary Fiction) in 2017.

She has received national acclaim and garnered rave reviews from USA Today, The Dallas Morning Star, Midwest Book Review, Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist, The Library Journal, The Quarterly Black Review, Essence Magazine, and Ebony Magazine.

Her works were considered by Showtime and Hallmark for book-to-movie options. Her novels have been used as part of the English curriculum at University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, where she was guest author, and was invited by Harvard University to submit a short story for their literary magazine.

I had the honor of being granted an interview with the busy and multi-talented award winning author recently.  Her life speaks volumes about her love of writing and aplomb for telling a great story. Checkout her interview below...

Albany, NY - New York State Senator Leroy Comrie, Ranking Member on the Consumer Protection Committee, announced the introduction of legislation in response to the Equifax hack that potentially compromised sensitive information for 143 million American consumers. Senator Comrie’s legislation would expedite the time in which a data breach must be reported, help assist and protect consumers in dealing with the theft of their personal information and provide clear state regulation over consumer credit reporting agencies.

“From the initial Equifax hack to the company’s inadequate response, it is clear that New York State should be doing much more to incentivize businesses to better protect consumer data,” said Senator Leroy Comrie. “In the ever evolving world of emerging technology, it is imperative that safeguards are in place to prevent personal information like social security numbers and banking information from so easily ending up in the hands of hackers.”

-------

City Hall – Today, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Housing and Buildings Committee Chair Jumaane Williams, and Council Member Carlos Menchaca joined advocates to announce a conclusion to lengthy negotiations over construction safety training legislation. The result is a bill shaped by extensive feedback from the public and stakeholders from every quarter, and one that will make construction sites safer for everyone – from the people who live and work near those sites to the workers who build them.

“Throughout negotiations on Introduction 1447-C, we have remained committed to working with advocates and stakeholders on developing legislation that both educates and protects the scores of construction site laborers working around the city. Establishing site safety training requirements and mandating the creation of an equal access informational program goes far in accomplishing that mission, and we am proud of the collaboration between the City Council and the administration that saw $4 million contributed toward the realization of this goal. We are pleased to see Introduction 1447-C voted out of committee today, and look forward to its upcoming review by the full City Council.
