7 Amazing Soul Food Restaurants in Jamaica Queens and Harlem NYC

If you're looking for good soul food, all you have to do is ask around. Another way is to check out a recent list published by Black Enterprise. Their top 5 picks are not only restaurants owned by successful African Americans, but they also serve some of the best soul food in the country.

Dinner at Southern Girls Restaurant

Here are 7 Amazing Soul Food Restaurants in no particular order:

1 - Amy Ruth's: located on 116th Street (NYC), established in 1998, is open 24 hours to serve up your favorites, named after celebrities. They include The Nate Robinson (BBQ ribs), The Ruby Dee (catfish), and of course, The President Barack Obama (fried, smothered, baked or BBQ chicken). Owner Carl S. Redding named the restaurant after his grandmother, Amy Ruth Moore Bass.

2. Vibe Restaurant - This is a trendy attractive soul food spot on Liberty Avenue. We hope it becomes as well known as some of the Uptown and Brooklyn soul food restaurants.  It is the closest thing to the highly respected soul food restaurants in Harlem.

It has a creative ambience and nice presentation of food with some artistic updated versions of traditional soul food staples.  The food at Vibe is really tasty and it is definitely worth visiting to dine or have receptions.  Vibe is located at:
143-06 Liberty Ave, Jamaica, NY 11435. To checkout their website is click here .  For more info: See our full review

3. Red Rooster Harlem: a favorite on Lenox Avenue (NYC), Red Rooster is owned by Andrew Chapman and Marcus Samuelsson who opened a restaurant that would have a positive impact in their neighborhood of Harlem. Named after an old speakeasy, the restaurant serves delicious soul food (try blackened catfish and grits with a slice of black bottom peanut pie) and music.

4. Southern Girls Soul Food Restaurant - is a medium sized soul food sit down or catering restaurant with delicious food and outstanding service.  Their server Nissa is extremely gracious and a definite 20%+ tip servicer.  She's outstanding and one of the best waitresses we've ever seen in Queens.

They can fry chicken that is also juicy and very tasty.  The BBQ chicken is the best I've tasted in a soul food restaurant.

Their Corn, Okra, and Tomato gumbo dish is also very tasty although on the sweet side as are the candied yams.  They have an attractive restaurant and catering hall that you can bring family members and business clients.

If you love southern food you gotta make a stop at Southern Girls Soul Food Restaurant. Their location is
218-28 Merrick Blvd Laurelton Ny 11413.  And for their website and menu click here

5. Smoke BBQ Pit - This restaurant has a combination of modern jumbo screens but still owns a down home BBQ feel to it too.  The food is tasty southern food and the atmosphere is relaxed.

The service is also pretty good at this restaurant.  The address is: 129-21 Merrick Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11434. Checkout the website click here . There phone number is: (718) 341-6100

6. Sylvia's Restaurant: located in Harlem, New York, Sylvia's Restaurant has been serving menu favorites like southern fried chicken and grits, corn meal dusted catfish and Bar-B-Que ribs since 1962. Sylvia's is owned by Sylvia Woods, the “Queen of Soul Food.”

7. Melba's:located on W. 114th Street (NYC), Melba's opened in 2005 and is owned by Melba Wilson. It is considered the ultimate in comfort food, like catfish strips, southern crab cakes, and of course, southern fried chicken.
